"Feeding street cats at the moment is very complicated, even more than usual! Usually, we mix the kibble we give to the cats with leftover chicken, fish... But at the moment, with the Ramadan period, most shops are closed, so we can't get any more. Cats can only rely on the kibble we bring them for food!
The thing is, there are always more cats to feed due to abandonments, but our donations don't keep up... We've already had to reduce the amount of kibble we give out on our rounds because we don't have enough stock. We can't reduce the number of rounds however, because we already only visit once a day! The street cats don't eat enough, that's for sure. And without this campaign, we won't be able to feed them at all...
I draw on my savings to buy a few bags here and there, but it's not enough, and my resources are far from being inexhaustible either... Today we have 8 bags left, enough to last only a few days. This campaign is my only hope to continue feeding the street cats and keep them alive!
"My shelter has 300 cats at the moment, the majority of which are injured, blind, sick or abandoned. Just this morning, a woman abandoned 6 cats in a house, which I had to take with me... My shelter is at maximum capacity, I even have some cats in boarding houses because I don't know where to put them anymore!
I have so many cats to take care of, but the problem is that I don't have a big structure, no volunteers behind me, and no funding! It's sad but I have absolutely no donation for kibble... and on top of that, prices have gone up ! I am often forced to lower the quality of kibble, but this is not good for the cats' health. I worry daily about the cats in my shelter... They are far too vulnerable to survive a kibble shortage! This campaign is a breath of fresh air for me, and a matter of survival for my cats, quite simply."
"Kina was abandoned by her former owners who could no longer care for her. Her hind legs are paralysed, probably as a result of a traffic accident, as it is unfortunately too often the case here... She moves with difficulty and sometimes falls. She is a very sweet cat, but she's entirely dependent on my good care to survive, and on the kibble I can or cannot bring her! This campaign's success is vital for her, just like the many other vulnerable cats in my care."
"People tend to think that I receive thousands of euros in grants and donations per month, but it's not true! The proportion of donations I receive compared to my expenses is really small... I try to get "yum-yum" donations for kibbles, and "first aid" donations to pay for half days of treatment for the cats, but it doesn't work, or very badly... Even my sponsorships have gone down!
I am forced to draw on my resources to continue helping the cats, but soon there will be none left! I'm like a CEO, I have to deal with every single aspect of the rescue, but without much help... and sadly, the cats in distress are always more numerous! The only help I get is from a Swiss foundation, they help me finance part of the sterilisations. Their help is precious of course, but compared to all the expenses I have to run the shelter and help the street cats, it is unfortunately not enough.
If this campaign is successful, I could concentrate on all these other aspects, treatments, sterilizations... I wouldn't have to worry about a month's worth of kibble, and my cats wouldn't have to endure the changes in diet or the rationing! They are not responsible of anything, and don't deserve to go hungry..."
"I have been involved in animal protection in Morocco for many years. I would say that my greatest pride to date, if one can say it like that, is the sterilization program that I run. Unfortunately, due to a lack of resources, it is not on a large enough scale, but there are still visible changes in certain neighbourhoods, where there are far fewer sick cats and fewer births! I also have a program called 'I love the cats in my house', which allows residents to have their animals sterilised at a lower cost, thanks to the preferential rate granted to me by certain vets. It works quite well and I have the impression that some people are gradually becoming more aware of the animal cause thanks to this.
I'm happy about these small improvements but I have to admit that the majority of the population is not yet won over to my cause... I regularly hear people say 'you'd better look after humans! But the thing is, my actions also benefit the local community! I employ people at my shelter, and through our actions in the field, sterilisations, feeding, we also try to allow a harmonious cohabitation between humans and animals."
