Animal Webaction visited the site 08 April 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
“I have more than 200 dogs at the shelter and there’s been a huge surge in abandonments lately: many people from neighbouring villages come to town and leave their dogs there, thinking they’ll get some food more easily… Besides, it is also spring, so there are many dogs that get pregnant and give birth, as they’re mostly unsterilised. Therefore, a lot of female dogs or litters of puppies are gotten rid of in the streets, because people can’t afford to take care of them…
My main concern at the shelter is the lack of kibble for the dogs; we don't have enough of it and we've had to reduce their portions by almost half in the last month… They’re clearly underfed! Now, there are only two kibble bags left, which is barely sufficient for one day… The lack of donations and funds is making it even more difficult to provide for the dogs properly. Everything is more expensive and we keep getting indebted to try and keep the dogs safe and fed! I feel horrible… This campaign cannot fail again! These dogs are my life, I don’t want to lose another one in fights out of starvation.”
“I am really worried about my dogs’ health and safety… They aren’t eating enough, they’re losing too much weight and they often fight… Those fights are dangerous and even more violent when they’re starving. I unfortunately lost dogs due to some of these fights and it’s heartwrenching!
We are also dealing with several sick dogs: there are cases of parvovirus, babesiosis (a disease transmitted by ticks) and gastroenterocolitis, which is absolutely concerning - these dogs are already really weakened by the diseases and I’m scared they won’t make it nor handle their treatments if I can’t find solutions to provide them with more kibble…
If this campaign fails, I’m scared the dogs will become even more aggressive and continue to attack each other! I can’t let these fights escalate! I feel helpless... If hunger doesn’t kill my dogs, diseases or violent fights will! I fear for their lives if we don’t get more kibble soon… ”
“Nero is a 2-year-old male who was rescued from the garbage… He was badly mistreated, beaten several times. His legs are crooked and the after-effects of rickets will remain visible, despite his treatment…
He tends to isolate himself a lot from the rest of the pack - he has a lot of trouble walking. He remains particularly gaunt and I fear that he won’t make it if this kibble campaign fails… Besides, he’s a very fragile dog and he could easily get caught in fights due to his poor condition!”
“I receive a very small retirement pension and I could never make it without my husband’s help, when it comes to the shelter’s expenses… But our financial situation has taken a turn for the worse in recent months; back when the last campaign failed, we received donations to help us buy kibble, but since then, we’ve never received the same amount of support again…
There are way more dogs, more puppies at the shelter so all the bills only get bigger! We’re struggling more than ever to cover all these costs and our debts are piling up, whether it’s for kibble or at the vet clinic, to pay for the dogs' treatments, surgeries, sterilisations… Although the vet is kind-hearted and doesn’t pressure us, these bills have to be paid!
It’s very difficult to raise enough money and get donations, nowadays. People simply can’t donate much anymore… I even had to postpone my urgent knee surgery again, to try and pay for the dogs’ treatments and kibble bills! We get some invaluable support from Les Oubliés de Roumanie (a French support group) but sadly, it’s no longer enough to feed our dogs!”
“I've always had a love for animals, it's like I was born to help them and I feel a lot of empathy towards them! I made a promise to myself that I would help those who cannot ask for help - animals… Being among the dogs brings me so much joy and happiness! I forget about all my pain and health issues… Whenever I save a stray dog’s life, it’s a small victory!
But there’s a constant fear of not having enough resources to continue helping them… The lack of kibble is a recurring issue, but low adoption rate is another one. Not many of them have happened lately, which doesn’t help decreasing the number of the dogs at the shelter; last month, we had four dogs who got adopted… but 28 new rescue dogs arrived at the shelter!
There’s still a huge issue with the sterilisation of pets, here. We need a mass change, specifically, mass sterilisations. There is still a lot of work to be done to improve animal welfare issues in our country! It's important for people to support our actions because I can’t help all these dogs on my own! I don't want them to die or suffer, I want to give these dogs the life they deserve…”
