Animal Webaction visited the site 07 April 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"Times are tough at the shelter right now. The weather is unforgiving, with heavy rain and cold temperatures making everything muddy and wet. It really doesn't feel like Spring! The dogs live outside and obviously feel the effects of this weather: they are cold, wet, and it is easy for them to get sick in these conditions.
But the weather is not the only problem we face, sadly. Although the municipality provides us with kibble every week, the quantities are far from enough for the number of dogs in our care! Private donations are also becoming increasingly rare, so it is very difficult to feed our dogs properly, or sufficiently...
Having to cut back on portions is heartbreaking, it is the last thing we want; but unfortunately, we have no choice! We barely have two days of kibble left... When the dogs see us arrive at the shelter, they are overjoyed, eager to play and get snuggles from us... Most of them have never known good treatment before coming here. Of course, we give them all the love we can, but we can't arrive empty-handed! Today, we need your help to be able to feed them, and continue to fulfill our duty towars them."
"With so many dogs in our care, finding enough kibble is a constant struggle and it also means we run out very quickly. I have tried everything to remedy this situation: I have contacted the school canteens to convince them to give us their leftovers; I insisted with the municipality that the quantities of kibble delivered each week increase. So far, nothing has come to fruition.
The problem is that our dogs do not have a strong immunity to begin with... Food of poor quality or in insufficient quantities makes them all the more easily sick! If I don't find a way to get kibble quickly, I know the consequences will be devastating. The dogs will get sick, nervous and may even fight with each other; I really don't want that to happen! And that's exactly why we need your help today. It is essential that dogs receive proper meals and nutrient rich kibble to avoid this situation. They do not deserve to starve or suffer more hardship than they already have in their lives..."
"Pongo is a young female that I found on the street in very, very bad condition. I guess someone abandoned her, because it was obvious that she hadn't eaten properly for a long time. She was eating apples and grass to survive... She needs to have more vet tests, as I suspect she has an underlying health problem. She is still very thin and is not gaining weight. It is important that she be fed regularly, otherwise she will get much worse much faster and given her already very fragile condition, she may not survive at all..."
"The municipality covers a very small part of our veterinary expenses and our kibble needs. We have to fund everything else ourselves... We are constantly trying to get donations and kibble, but the economy is really not favorable. First COVID, then inflation. The prices of basic necessities have gone up, everyone is struggling. People don't want to spend money on dogs since they don't even have enough for their own immediate needs!
Of course, the same goes for adoptions. Anyway, people here would rather buy dogs from breeders than adopt a shelter dog... But if the situation was bad before, it is even worse now! Unfortunately, our actions for the dogs depend on and are limited by the funds at our disposal. The lack of resources forces us to postpone rescues, veterinary consultations... and to ration the portions of kibble. This is a sad reality.
If this campaign is successful, our dogs would be guaranteed to eat their fill for several weeks, it would be invaluable! We would also be able to focus on all the other things that deserve our attention, and that help improve the lives of our shelter dogs. All we want is for our dogs to be happy and healthy... We have all the determination in the world to keep going, but we just need a little support to get there!"
"I've been fighting for animals my whole life. At 70, I'm still at the shelter every day, rain or shine. There are no weekends for me-I have to be there constantly to care for the dogs and make sure they have human interaction. I'm old and tired, but I won't stop. It doesn't matter if I never have a day off or if I have to work in all kinds of weather; as long as I can help the dogs and see them happy and well fed, it's worth it and makes up for every hard day!
In all honesty, I also know that if I didn't help these dogs, no one else would... With the exception of a few people who actually care about their pets, most people here are just plain ignorant. They see street dogs as a problem and don't care if they are healthy or happy. If I didn't save them, these poor dogs would stay on the street or be euthanized... That's why I try to save all the dogs I can, in the hope of giving them a better life.
My whole life revolves around animals, around this shelter and around trying to make a difference. I have taken classes in animal care and I try to spread the word about the shelter, the dogs... I hope with all my heart that through this harvest, people will see our situation and decide to help us, it would be wonderful for all these innocent beings."
