Animal Webaction visited the site 13 May 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
“Right now, we're looking after more than 300 dogs, along with 50 puppies… Despite our efforts to get some of them adopted and control the influx, new cases keep coming, so it’s definitely overcrowded in our shelter…
The climbing costs of everything, from gasoline to treatments, and dwindling donations have us stretched thin… We're feeding our dogs the cheapest kibble we could find, even having to reduce their portions for the past couple of months. At this point, we’ll be out of kibble in less than 2 days!
The shelter's overpopulation has also led to fights, some of which have ended tragically… I’ve been feeling very unwell and depressed in the last few weeks. The lack of resources is a weight on my shoulders, especially the constant fear of running out of kibble, which could lead to chaos amongst our dogs.”
“We're seeing the fallout from the cheaper kibble and smaller portions - our most fragile dogs, the older and younger, are experiencing digestive issues. But even worse, the fights over this poor quality food have increased, and tragically, some of our dogs have already lost their lives in these altercations… We do our maximum to prevent these terribly stressful events from happening, but it’s very hard for us to run everywhere and look after each dog, knowing we’re understaffed…
If the kibble runs out, the emotional toll would be immense. The stress and the exhaustion would be too overwhelming. We'd have to resort to leftovers, which, aside from not being nutritious, would only exacerbate health issues and the fighting… Tensions among the dogs would escalate, possibly turning into other deadly fights, as they compete for any scraps available... I can’t let that happen again, I need this campaign to succeed!”
“Mosulica has been with us at the shelter for about two months now. We found him all alone, wandering on the tram line in Bucharest. Somebody who saw him called us and asked if we could take him in, so we did. Given his age and the fact that he's blind, we think he was most likely abandoned. His owners probably just didn't need him anymore…
He has a severe case of glaucoma, he's deaf, and he's got heart issues... He's in poor health! Yet he's very calm and seems happy to be here with us. But he is particularly vulnerable and if he doesn't receive nutritious, quality kibble, his health will deteriorate rapidly. We fear the worst for him, he might not make it if this campaign fails…”
“Our financial situation is severely affecting our ability to provide for the dogs. Necessary surgeries, treatments, even appointments are being postponed. We're drowning in debt, owing thousands of euros to various veterinary clinics.
Donations have plummeted over the past couple of months, perhaps due to the current economic climate, the war, and the sheer number of cases needing help, not just in our shelter but others too!
The success of this kibble campaign is crucial for us. It's about buying us a moment to breathe, easing some of the relentless pressure and being able to properly feed the dogs. If it fails, the burden will only get heavier, we’ll get into more debts and at some point, we won’t manage to buy any more kibble…”
“My journey with animal protection began as a child, thanks to my mother, Anda. From rescuing our first animal when I was in kindergarten, we found ourselves caring for a hundred by the time I was 18. It was then we started this shelter. Now, my commitment to rescuing animals has led me to study at the Veterinary Faculty!
Our rescue provides a glimmer of hope for the helpless, the sick, and the injured dogs. Adoptions is our main goal, but it's becoming harder to find responsible, caring individuals who are ready for pet ownership. Likely, economic hardships and the fact that those who wanted a dog have already adopted play a part...
It is emotionally draining to witness animal abuse, so I try to focus on our rescue missions as best as possible, to give a second chance at life for unlucky dogs… Locally, we're tolerated, but the lack of involvement and support from authorities and people is sad… Yet we really need all the help we can get, this work takes a village, it’s not just a single person’s job!”
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
“Support is sparse at a local level, but I feel lucky that we have a few volunteers who come once a week, to help us with the chores and communication. Our biggest ally is from abroad - Célestia, a French association. They're instrumental in promoting our dogs for adoption and fundraising… We’re grateful for everything they do for us, but sadly, it isn’t sufficient to meet our dogs’ needs.
We could do much more with sponsors and funds! Companies stepping forward would be a game-changer with their financial power… Recently, we sought help from organisations for free sterilisation campaigns, but the response was quite disheartening. It left me wary to ask for anything more…
Our fundraising attempts, like a recent Facebook campaign for a month's worth of kibble, have been disappointing. We raised less than 10% of what we needed in two weeks. We desperately need this Animal Webaction campaign, now. It’s our last chance to get kibble for our dogs!”
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
