Animal Webaction visited the site 27 May 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"I currently take care of more than a hundred cats in various parts of the town... Their number are constantly increasing: sterilisation is not practised and the cycle of abandonment seems endless. The situation is particularly bad in summer, when animals are massively abandoned - and cats suffer greatly...
People abandon their cats at feeding sites, thinking they might just get by on food... These cats rely on me to eat and I can only give them small portions of kibble. What's more, as supplies are dwindling, I'm now forced to skip some feeding sites!
They gather in front of the shelter and follow me outside constantly, hoping to get something to eat. This situation saddens me enormously, it makes me desperate... My usual donors can't help me any more, so if this campaign fails, the feeding rounds will become increasingly sporadic, until I completely run out of kibble..."
"Sila is a little street cat who was abandoned near my refuge, with her sibling kittens, each one skinnier than the next... I tried to feed her as best I could, to help her regain her strength: Sila suffers from advanced stages of mange and coryza. But because of the lack of food, she only relapses.
Unfortunately, my shelter is already full to bursting, so I can't take her in. Without kibble, I'm afraid she'll lose even more weight and her immune system will weaken further, making her even more susceptible to more serious infections!"
"With 180 cats, my shelter is full! But I'm still taking in the most urgent cases. Inflation hasn't helped matters: the cost of kibble, canned food and even transport to save new cases - in short, all the expenses associated with the shelter and the cats - have become far too expensive! Now, in a handful of days, my last bag of kibble will be empty...
I have to ration the quantities, I only feed the cats once a day and they're hungry! Sometimes I give them leftovers to try and make up for the lack of kibble, but it's not ideal, and it's not healthy either... The more fragile ones get weaker and many lose weight... I can't sleep at night, I'm afraid they'll starve to death or fall seriously ill if I don't get any kibble, and it depresses me greatly."
"Lile is an 8-year-old male who has been living in my shelter for a few months. He was abandoned by his family and when he arrived at the shelter, he was very thin and very fragile, weakened by his previous living conditions... Lile suffers from coryza, the infection started in his nose and has now spread to his mouth.
His condition is critical and the lack of kibble is only making it worse... He needs a good diet to fight off the coryza but if the campaign fails, it will put him in serious danger!"
"My shelter entirely relies on donations. Thanks to them, I can sterilise the cats, look after them, feed them and keep the shelter running... Without donations, my shelter would no longer exist! But they've dwindled far too much. The lack of funds means that I have to postpone certain essential veterinary treatments, such as sterilising stray cats or hospitalising them.
I'm deeply in debt, and I'm accumulating unpaid bills, both to the pet shop and to the vet. Sometimes the vet even refuses to take on new cases until I've cleared my debts. I feel helpless... I launch fund-raising campaigns, but they don't work like they used to: I never manage to reach the targeted goal.
Stray Care International, with Monique, helps me with sterilisations and treatments, but the frequency depends on the donations she receives, and these are also falling sharply... This campaign is my last hope! If it fails, my cats won't have anything to eat, and that would be a disaster for both the cats in the shelter and those on the streets...".
"I started taking care of street cats at a very young age... At first, I just looked after a few cats, but now I have a shelter housing over 180 cats and I look after hundreds of street cats! It's a lot of responsibility, but every day I maintain the same determination to give these cats a better life...
Recently, adoptions have been scarce. The economic crisis has had an undeniable impact, and I'm also very vigilant and selective when it comes to giving away my cats: I'm afraid they'll be abandoned again! I'd rather keep them in the shelter than see them end up on the streets again.
If I had more support and resources, I'd have more street cats sterilised to curb their proliferation and epidemics... Sometimes I get negative reactions, because some people are against sterilisation, while others don't want me to feed the cats anymore... But this negativity doesn't stop me from staying focused on my actions towards the cats!"
Animal Webaction has a logistical platform in Morocco, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"Monique from Stray Care International helps me regularly, particularly with the sterilisation of the animals and sometimes with other care, depending on her means. The frequency of her help depends on the donations she receives: the more donations she receives, the more the cats are pampered! But she helps many other volunteers and unfortunately, her help alone isn't enough for our needs... I've tried to contact other people and organisations for help, but unfortunately I've had no response.
I lack the means to sterilise, feed and care for the cats. But my constant appeals for solidarity on my page, as well as my 'Teaming', which is managed by a friend of mine, are no longer enough to cover everything. More than ever, I need people's support - I can't do anything on my own! Without help, I'd be forced to stop rescuing and feeding street cats..."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the beneficiary receives nothing and the buyers get a refund...
