Animal Webaction visited the site 04 June 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"The situation of Essaouira's street dogs is catastrophic, especially those in the Douar district. The poor things are mistreated, hunted, beaten... their only moment of trust and joy is when we come to feed them. But we can't do that as much as we used to! We're distributing kibble and leftover chicken twice a week, for lack of funds... It's not nearly enough!
The dogs are getting thinner by the minute, and if I don't manage to build up a new stock of kibble, I know it's going to be a massacre. The local population already doesn't accept me feeding them, so if the dogs change territory, approach them because they're hungry, or fight amongst themselves to eat, I know they'll report them to the town hall and cullings will take place. The latter are still legion, and unfortunately all too frequent... It's making me sick and exhausted! I'm really counting on this campaign to be able to spare them all this, there's no other solution..."
"Ziggy is a male about 8 months old, he was born on the street. He lives with a pack of stray dogs and unfortunately, he recently caught scabies. He's really weak, and the few kibbles I can bring him at the moment won't make any difference to him... He needs a good diet, in quantities and over time, to start getting better. Especially as he's very timid, and it's impossible for me to catch him to have him treated at the moment.
Without kibble to bring him on a regular basis, I won't be able to establish a bond of trust with him, care for him and give him the chance to heal. I'm afraid he won't survive... People avoid him because of his illness or throw stones at him, he lives in the indifference of most people and without my help, I know he'll die the same way..."
"At the shelter, as on the streets, we are limited by our means: at present, the 48 dogs we house only eat kibble every other day... Because of hunger, we have already had to deal with fights and they are very difficult to contain. We're as short of kibble as we are of hands: only Rachid, my employee, and I are on hand to look after them and prevent the fights from getting out of hand! It's a very precarious situation for everyone...
The lack of kibble is having a knock-on effect, with the dogs suffering from diarrhoea and falling ill more easily. I'm afraid we're entering a downward spiral, because illnesses, fights and injuries require extra care and funds that we don't have!
We already have very sensitive cases to deal with with limited resources, and given the current situation, we can't afford to make any rescues either. I can only count on the help of this campaign to ensure the lives of the dogs, whether they be those already at the shelter, or those in need of rescue!"
"Before COVID, people used to support us by sending regular donations, but since then we've lost a lot of donors, both literally and figuratively: some have passed away, others are trying to get their lives back on track and can no longer afford to help us. We're sorely lacking in donations, and the current situation is really difficult.
I fund part of the shelter's needs from my own salary, but with all the price rises, it's far from enough! My veterinary debts, whether to the pharmacy or the kibble shops, are growing all the time, as is my despair... I frequently have insomnia and cry because I know that without kibble, I'm condemning all the dogs in my care! This campaign has to succeed - it's simply a matter of survival for my dogs..."
"I've been involved with the animals in my area for over 8 years. My dogs are like my children, I see them as a responsibility in their own right, and I can't imagine ever letting them down or abandoning them. However, it's far from easy every day - animal protection is an activity littered with difficulties!
People don't agree with my actions, they're afraid that stray dogs will attack them, and often object to me feeding them... I try to make them understand that a fed dog won't attack them, but unfortunately their fear isn't rational. People's priorities lie elsewhere, so I'm not giving up hope, but let's just say that there's still a lot of work to be done to change people's minds about animals.
We're fighting with a number of Essaouira associations to get legislation moving too, and to get the town council to set up a massive sterilization and vaccination program for strays. We've been in talks since 2020 on this subject... I hope with all my heart that our efforts will eventually pay off, because it's the only way to stop the culls and the spread of diseases like rabies. It's essential for dogs and humans alike!"
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Morocco, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble everywhere in the country.
"It's very difficult for Moroccan associations to get support from foreign entities. Attracting support isn't easy either, because I work all day, and I spend all my free time looking after the dogs at the shelter. The days are too short! A friend based in Italy helps me update the Facebook page, and I'm extremely grateful to her. Unfortunately, donations to our association are still very rare, and I only have a small Moroccan salary to compensate...
All our accounts are in the red and every day I panic at the thought of not being able to feed all the animals in my care... It's really difficult to carry on in these conditions... I'm pinning all my hopes on this campaign to ensure the survival of my dogs above all, and to be able to breathe even if only for a little while!"
