Animal Webaction visited the site 05 June 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
“We're caring for 100 dogs at our shelter, a number on the rise as we try to save as many abandoned, injured dogs as we can from a certain death… Life at the shelter is not easy, as we’re faced with infrastructure issues, water scarcity and growing utility bills… Inflation and stagnant donations really affect our ability to cover the dogs’ most basic needs.
Our current kibble situation is critical and by far our biggest concern, as it directly impacts our dogs… We feed them with reduced portions of kibble, mixed with bread or rice when such leftovers are available. It's insufficient and they’re not eating enough! We've been rationing for a while and our meagre kibble stock will now only last a handful of days, at most.
The effects of insufficient and low-quality food are already visible - some dogs have turned more aggressive, their guarding instincts are taking over, while others are getting weaker and most are underweight… The necessity to make this campaign a success is clear; it’s crucial for our dogs’ health and recovery that they get quality kibble…”
“Igor is a 7-year-old dog we rescued following a traffic accident which had left him with severely infected wounds… The damage was too great and an amputation was unavoidable, unfortunately. He has a great character, he’s friendly and he’s also a well-trained dog.
But he remains fragile and he’s recovering slowly. He’s too emaciated to suffer from any kind of deprivation, so he absolutely needs this kibble delivery to keep healing and gaining weight!”
“Life for street dogs is brutal in the region... We look after more than 140 of them. They live off the kindness of a minority, while the rest have to scavenge to try to survive. The dogs who survive in the streets are the ones who manage to escape poisoning attempts, mass cullings, traffic accidents…
Their population is constantly on the rise, despite our best efforts to sterilise some of them… With our meagre resources, we cannot cope with their number. Besides, summer brings a fresh set of problems: parasites flourish and dehydration becomes a real issue…
Right now, they aren’t eating their fill and it’s survival of the fittest that rules; the strongest get the lion's share, leaving the weak ones in a worsening state… If we can't secure kibble for them too, they'll be left to fend for themselves, at the mercy of the streets.”
“Sand is a female who has always lived on the street. She was hit by a car and endured injuries that we managed to treat… It's not easy getting close to dogs like her who have only known the street - she's timid and suspicious of humans, though sociable once she realises we're there to take care of her!
These dogs have only us to rely on for care, feeding, and survival. We can't let them roam further and further in search of food in trash bins, always closer to residences. This puts them in great danger as they can get into accidents, get food poisoning, and additionally, many people don't tolerate them well. We count on this campaign to keep Sand and her street companions safe and sound!”
“The economic context affects everyone including me; I can no longer rely on my tourism activity as a source of income, it has stopped… And donations are still at their lowest, with little to no significant evolution; many people seem to have lost their motivation to help out dogs.
We have to rely on loans to cover all the necessary expenses for the dogs… Debts stack up, whether it’s to the kibble supplier or the vet, for all the treatments, vaccines, surgeries… We were lucky to receive some first-aid kits from veterinarians, but when it comes to the state or other potential partners, we don’t receive any help…
If we can't find kibble for our dogs, it's going to cause major problems here. We have a total of over 300 animals under our care, including horses and cats… We really need all the help and support to prevent a famine!”
“One memory that really sticks with me is of this paralysed dog we managed to nurse back to health - he's walking now! And we have countless stories of dogs who came very close to death who could make it, thanks to our help and care! We're a small team considering the number of animals under our care, doing everything from cleaning to treating…
We’re crucial in the region, our work contributes to reducing the strays’ population through sterilisation and raising awareness… The attitudes towards strays are slowly, surely, changing, thanks to us. But we're just a drop in the ocean. Animal protection in Morocco needs a bigger, bolder voice to make real change happen.
The number of animals we care for is growing and so do the related tasks! It’s hard to keep up. But we’re so thankful to everyone who's supported us and to Animal Webaction who helps us a great deal with their campaigns. We value your help and we're hoping for more support, more partnerships and more people involved to keep going and saving animals!”
