Animal Webaction visited the site 22 June 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"200 cats live at the shelter right now, and with the vacation season upon us, we're seeing an alarming rise in abandonments. Despite all our efforts to raise public awareness, abandonment remains commonplace here, and we very frequently find ourselves with abandoned cats outside our doors. Of course, when someone drops off a cat or kitten that has had an accident, is injured or sick... I can't say no. As a result, everyone gives us cats, and we're flooded!
With so many animals in our care, the supply of kibble is extremely difficult and, alas, our budget is no longer sufficient. At the moment, people are preoccupied with their holidays, so donations are dwindling accordingly. We have less than a week's supply of kibble left... The price of these essential commodities is rising all the time, and suppliers are refusing to grant us credit, making any new purchases impossible at the moment!
Without this campaign, we won't be able to continue providing for all the vulnerable cats who depend on us. This situation is extremely worrying, as their health and well-being depend entirely on our ability to provide them with adequate food! We sincerely hope we can count on your help to ensure a brighter future for our protégés, or at the very least, a full bowl..."
"Our cats have been losing weight lately, I'm very worried. You know, many of our cats come from desperate, precarious situations. They're either kittens, or aging, sick, injured... The lack of food makes them even more fragile, exposes them more to viral diseases and makes them prone to respiratory problems.
And when a cat suffers from bronchitis, runny nose and nasal congestion, it stops eating... This creates a vicious circle that's hard to break. This month, we've had to carry out numerous counter-vaccinations to curb the infections, which has resulted in considerable veterinary costs. We have no money left to buy kibble!
Without this delivery, our cats will continue to lose weight and become weaker, a situation we find unacceptable! We are dedicated to their well-being and want to avoid this at all costs. Every donation, no matter how small, can make a considerable difference in enabling them to regain their strength and fight the diseases that afflict them!"
"Nemo was dropped outside our shelter when he was still only a kitten. He arrived with a severe eye infection, which eventually led him to lose his eye. His field of vision is considerably reduced, limiting his mobility and his ability to cope on his own. But beyond this handicap which he will carry for the rest of his life, what particularly worries us is how skinny he currently is!
He's lost a lot of weight recently, it's upsetting. Nemo's situation is fragile, and every day that goes by without proper nutrition threatens his already weakened health... He needs kibble to regain his strength, weight and the energy essential to his survival!"
"Running our shelters, with the care of cats, dogs and equines, generates considerable monthly costs. Unfortunately, we're going through a period when donations are scarce. The cost of living in Europe has risen considerably, and here, cat abandonment is on the rise as owners prepare for their vacations.
Our biggest challenge at the moment is to find the necessary funds to feed the animals and cover veterinary costs, anti-parasite treatments, deworming... This month we have also organized sterilization campaigns for street cats and dogs, adding to our already very high fixed costs.
For the purchase of kibble, we have to pay cash, as suppliers no longer give us credit. The month goes by very quickly, especially when our accounts don't have enough funds to cover these essential expenses! Our association finds itself at an impasse to ensure the basic needs of our cats and continue our rescue and protection work..."
"I fight every day to try and increase the number of cat adoptions, but unfortunately these remain very low. The problem is that we can't continue to carry out so many rescues if we don't have any adoptions! Life is hard with so many animals to care for; for them and for us. Offering them a loving home would be the best reward for us!
The TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) method is my battle-horse in trying to stem the uncontrolled reproduction of strays and the proliferation of disease. We're still working with the national authorities to try and get things moving; but until the issue is legislated, I'm forced to sterilize the animals at my own expense, with the support of a Swiss-based foundation.
We sterilize around 50 stray cats every month, and we also help some owners to sterilize their animals. I figure if we do that, maybe the number of abandoned cats will go down! And even if a sterilized cat is abandoned, at least it no longer has the chance to reproduce... Because otherwise, we're the ones who have to take care of the kittens! Animal protection feels like a never-ending cycle... Nevertheless, I remain devoted to it, because I know that it's only by continuing at all costs that we'll be able to make a difference for all these suffering animals."
