Animal Webaction visited the site 07 July 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
“Our shelter is currently home to 119 dogs... We keep rescuing dogs and for each new dog, the costs are increasing, when it comes to covering every vital expense (vet care, kibble…). Indeed, it's a constant battle to secure food at the shelter and our current kibble situation is critical: at best, we now only have enough kibble for another three days! We even had to start reducing the portions we feed our dogs with…
Donations are too low and they’re harder to obtain than ever… I truly lack funding and I don’t know how long I could continue. Despite being in poor health myself, I spend my days caring for the dogs, supervising them, treating them, feeding them, ensuring they're all okay… It’s so hard but I can’t let them down! This campaign is my last option to keep them safe from starvation!”
“The dogs are hungry and increasingly agitated… I dread any escalations - which can happen very quickly! - although they haven’t bitten each other so far… I feel desperate, powerless to change anything... I don't sleep, I cry every day and I grieve. I have terrible nightmares - my bags under my eyes speak for themselves!
Even though there are less of them thanks to the measures taken by the municipality, there are still a dozen strays who rely on me for food… They won’t be able to survive if I stop the feedings. So many dogs will be in danger if we don't secure more kibble… I fear the worst! Most dogs will get sick, even the stronger ones… There will be fights over food and some dogs might get severely injured or even killed!”
“Hope arrived at the shelter this weekend: she had been brought to the vet with multiple wounds… She lost a huge amount of blood, she's been given infusions to relieve pain and infection, and her wounds have been stitched. She was bitten while living in the streets, as during mating season, fights among the packs (especially if some of the dogs aren't sterilised) can be really dangerous!
Now, it's a waiting game and her recovery will take time. She’s slowly starting to drink water and eat a little again, which is a positive sign. But Hope’s state of health remains very fragile, her chances to survive and to fully heal are really uncertain as the kibble stock is depleting - she needs to build up her strength and it won’t be possible without this kibble delivery!”
“Almost all our shelter's funding comes from my own pension... I also receive small, but meaningful donations from friends in Germany who sell their old things online. But each month, I'm putting in a huge amount of money from my own pocket and despite this, it’s not enough - I have debts to the vet, to the kibble supplier…
Without food, everything else falls apart. But even though I prioritise kibble supply, I no longer have enough resources to buy enough and it clearly impacts the quality of life I can provide for the dogs. The lack of money impacts every crucial aspect… But, with the general lack of interest in animal welfare, our donations are dwindling.
Our appeals for help aren’t really successful, no matter the goal… At least - and we’re really lucky - the city's mayor has graciously waived our rent for the next five years, which will be a huge financial relief… The economy might be declining, which impacts everything from donations to our financial abilities, but I think the real issue is the lack of empathy for abandoned animals…”
“I'll never forget when I first witnessed dog catchers mistreating and beating dogs in the streets… It was gruesome, there was blood, the dogs were whining… I couldn’t stand what I was seeing so I went to fight with them, physically! I was so in shock, I can still feel it in my bones - this was a crucial moment that led me to protect animals from their bullies and rescue them!
I want to save every stray I encounter but it's just not possible! The pain of seeing vulnerable animals, knowing I can't help them all, depresses me so much. I have sleepless nights when I think about those dogs I can’t provide a shelter for…
I’m so proud I managed to have the municipality implement free sterilisations and microchipping for pet owners, leading to fewer strays… I am the dogs’ only voice, here. I advocate for their rights but I can't do this alone for long, now… My age is catching up! I’m so thankful for everyone and organisations, like Animal Webaction, helping me feed my dogs…”
