Animal Webaction visited the site 14 July 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"We currently care for 126 dogs at the shelter. Although we manage to conduct regular adoptions with a partner association in Netherlands, they are on the low at present. Many dogs stay with us for a long time, sometimes their whole life, it is their home.
Right now we feed them with some mediocre kind of kibble and old bread. Since it’s a low quality food we have to compensate and give them bigger rations for them to stay okay, but our stock is quickly running out. My main concern is to not allow them to go hungry: if I can't find any new kibble, they will starve, which will lead to sickness and death.
I feel stressed out and nervous. I devoted my life for this shelter and wellfare of the dogs in general. You can’t imagine how it is to have living beings depending on you, while you are not able to give them even the most basic thing they need to stay alive."
"We make a big difference, without our actions the city would be full of stray dogs. Neither the local authorities nor the people in the area are interested in these dogs. We still face killings from dog hunters in rural areas, maybe less than before, but it is probably just because there are less dogs on the street thanks to our shelter.
Not only do I have a lot of dogs depending on me, but I'm also expecting an increase of that number in the near future. And if I can't find help for them, it is clear that no one will. One person as an individual can’t do a lot, of course he can try, but with low results,."
"Cloi has been with us for about two weeks, she was brought here by two people who found her by the Sava river. I guess someone may have dropped her in the river to get rid of her, and maybe she managed to save herself.
She is around 3 months old, still very young, and a lot weaker than some other puppies we have at the shelter. She's still in isolation, as there are risks of diseases like parvovirus for example. We've already given her her first vaccine, but she's way more at risk of getting ill than some other dogs, that's why she absolutly needs kibble to make it."
"Everything is more expensive than before, but our income stays the same. Some products have risen by 100% with inflation! People just don't have any spare money anymore to support us as much as we would need them to, it's as simple as that.
Our appeals on Facebook do not have a huge impact, sometimes we manage to collect something but we cannot rely on that to keep going. We have debts for vet costs, for food, for fuel, phone and electricity, we are doing our best.
Honestly, I do my best to find donations of any kind, but it just doesn’t give any results, that is why I need this campaign to work."
"I gained love for the dogs, and trying to help them. At some point I realised that it wasn't enough, and I needed to do more for them, that is when I started the shelter to be able to rescue them from the street. We take them in, find them an accommodation, give them food and water, and for those who can, we have them adopted.
I’m trying, giving my best, but I’m not any younger, I have health problems, some of them are manifested from problems we have here at the shelter. I have physical and psychical problems, I can’t sleep, a lot of thing run on my mind. During my un sleepless nights, I’m requestioning myself, wondering how this shelter can provide the best for the dogs.
My wish is for the people who owe the dogs, to take care of them, not to abandon them, to prevent unwanted puppies with castration and sterilization. If we manage to raise that awareness, we will not have a lot of work to do here. But, it’s a hard way and I’m not sure I will manage to see it."
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Bosnia which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"Occasionally, sometimes, people come and bring a few bags of food, but it is mostly people who live in the European Union and have roots here, local people are not really interested in helping. This year, we managed to get about 1000€ from the municipality, which is not a lot, but it is better than nothing.
I try to search for help locally, and by reaching out to other associations in the EU, but I do not get any positive reply. Our partner association in the Netherlands has been supporting us for a long time, both with donations and adoptions, but they are already doing their maximum.
We need help from a wider range of people, but unfortunately – we don’t have it."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
