Animal Webaction visited the site 30 July 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"These two months have been the most difficult since the creation of the shelter... Despite a substantial number of followers on social media, our donations have dropped significantly since the beginning of the crisis, and with the vacation period, they have quite simply collapsed! We don't have a crutch to fall back on, as very few of our dogs are otherwise sponsored.
We're forced to buy the cheapest kibble, and in such small quantities that every day I'm gripped by uncertainty: will I be able to feed my dogs? At the moment, we have enough for three days... We're going to have to ration the remaining stock to try and hold out for a few more days.
We're desperate - this harvest would save our lives! Knowing that my dogs will have full bellies, and what's more, on healthy, balanced kibble for a whole month would be a real blessing given our current situation. That's the most important thing to me!"
"Dogs' current diet is having a detrimental effect on their behavior. Because they're forced to eat poor-quality kibble with very little protein, they're increasingly nervous. I live in fear that this will lead to fights, especially as the shelter is full and we'll soon have to ration the portions!
The lack of kibble coupled with overcrowding at the shelter also means I have to delay rescues. Seeing dogs abandoned in rubbish dumps and on the streets, of all sizes and ages, breaks my heart every day. And knowing that most of them had homes before only adds to my despair...
Saving these dogs means everything to me, but I can't do it alone, either financially or emotionally. Some days, the urge to give up is almost too strong... My only ray of hope right now is this harvest! If it succeeds, we'll be able to breathe a sigh of relief and, above all, have the guarantee that our dogs will be well fed for a month! It's our only lifeline, and I'm desperately clinging to it...".
"The crisis is hitting us hard, and with the vacations, people seem to have forgotten about us. The last two months have been particularly difficult, and August is not looking good either. My own salary covers part of the shelter's needs, but it's just a drop in the ocean. I'm drowning in debt, owing thousands of euros to the vet and the kibble supplier.
I've asked bakeries and food factories for leftovers, but we usually get a bag and a half at most each time, which isn't enough to cover our needs. I feel like I spend every day racking my brains wondering how we're going to make ends meet, and whether there will be enough kibble for the dogs.
Of course, adoptions are also at a standstill. We're holding our breath, hoping that September will bring back potential adopters and donors... But in the meantime, debts for vaccinations, treatments and sterilizations continue to pile up, and the kibble supplier won't allow us any more credit! I feel like I'm in a race against time, the pressure is overwhelming. My only hope in all this turmoil is the success of this campaign. It can't fail!"
"Dogs are my life, my everything. With each new rescue, my heart swells, and so does the shelter. I started with just 5 dogs, but today over 200 of them, between the shelter and the boarding kennels, rely on me. Sick, hungry and sometimes injured, they all come from the streets, where nobody seems to care about them. It's heartbreaking to see them ignored or, worse, mistreated by the public.
Many people here see dogs as objects, not as loving, intelligent beings. They don't hesitate to abandon their dogs in front of my shelter because it suits them, but they don't take the time to think about their actions, or even the consequences they have on a large scale.
Despite the difficulties, it's the love I receive from the dogs that keeps me going! And the anguish I feel at their suffering only fuels my desire to do more. I'll always do my best to try and improve their lives, they deserve it so much!"
