Animal Webaction visited the site 16 September 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"Our association looks after 135 cats at the shelter and around 150 cats on the streets of Marrakech; but this figure is constantly changing. We're just a few kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake, and although the animals at the shelter were spared, our association is working tirelessly to rescue the animals affected, be they cats, dogs, donkeys... All of them have added to the shelter's existing population.
The recent influx of animals has emptied our stocks much faster than expected. Our kibble reserves are completely exhausted! Our financial capacities have been stretched to the limit by the recent rescues, and the damage to the shelter's property, although manageable, has exacerbated our already precarious situation. The purchase of new kibble is, for the moment, completely out of our reach!
Cats' health depends directly on their diet; and for the injured animals we've just taken in, every minute counts to avoid catastrophe. The next few weeks could be dramatic if no one comes to our aid..."
"The kibble shortage is upsetting the fragile balance of our shelter. I'm already seeing worrying signs: some cats are starting to lose weight and become weaker. Without kibble, not only does the cats' health suffer, but it also compromises the effectiveness of our veterinary treatments. A well-fed cat responds better to care; and given the growing number of distressed cats we've rescued in recent weeks - and still have to rescue every day - getting kibble is an absolute priority!
If this campaign fails, we'll soon be overwhelmed by the number of weakened cats. And in the face of this threat, another heartbreaking decision looms: that of perhaps not being able to take in any more cats at all. It's a possibility that's looming ever larger, and one that plunges me into total despair. Without sufficient resources, every decision becomes a cruel dilemma... All these cats are counting on us, especially at this difficult time. We can't let them down now!"
"I have tried everything to remedy the shortage of kibble. I've posted on our networks to make people aware of our situation, and I've even launched an appeal to the Moroccan diaspora; the responses have been warm, but unfortunately the kibble is still lacking. I've asked those close to me to do their utmost to share the situation with those around them, but in the current circumstances, people's priorities lie elsewhere. The economic situation and the natural disaster we've just suffered are not making people's generosity any easier, which is totally understandable.
My kibble supplier no longer offers me payment facilities because of accumulated debts, and my attempts to collaborate with local restaurants and markets have been turned down. Online fundraising efforts have fallen short of their targets and my personal savings are totally depleted; I'm going into debt to support our rescue operations but I can't go on like this indefinitely... All these cats depend on me for their daily meals and not being able to offer them the bare minimum is a very difficult reality to accept. Without kibble, their future is bleak, and despite my determination, the obstacles seem insurmountable..."
"The kibble shortage turns my daily mission into a race against time, and puts me in a situation where every decision becomes critical. It's inconceivable to turn your back on a vulnerable cat; yet you can't rescue a cat from the street, care for it or adopt it, if you can't even offer it basic food! Every cat I manage to help represents a triumph, but without kibble, these victories are seriously compromised...
Kibbles transcend all other needs, because they represent the difference between life and death for our cats. If a solution isn't found quickly, it's the cats who will pay the highest price, reversing all the efforts made and the hope of a better life for them. It's a weight that weighs heavily on my shoulders and my conscience, as I know they depend entirely on my ability to provide them with this vital resource... Without this kibble, I fear the worst is yet to come for these cats I've sworn to protect!"
"In Morocco, my fight for these cats is a constant challenge. My resources are limited, and the amount of kibble needed to feed them all often seems insurmountable. Sometimes, public incomprehension is almost as difficult to deal with as the lack of resources. In a society where the animal cause is not always a priority, the feeling of isolation can be overwhelming. The nights are short, marked by incessant thoughts of how to provide for these animals who depend entirely on me for their survival.
The battle I fight may seem lonely, but its impact is immense for these cats who have no one else to turn to. Yes, there are moments of discouragement, moments when everything seems bleak. But the awareness of the importance of what I do keeps me on my feet. And every support, every gesture, no matter how small, is a breath of oxygen in a suffocating environment. It's what drives me forward, to continue this solitary battle. The impact on these cats is immense, and they deserve every effort."
