Animal Webaction visited the site 26 September 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"The stock of kibble at the shelter is running out. In five days, there will be nothing left to give the dogs. It's a situation I've been dreading, but can no longer ignore. For ten days now, I've had to ration the portions for all the dogs. The result is visible and alarming: they're showing signs of malnutrition. Their ribs are showing and their energy levels are dropping.
This shortage has also created tensions between the dogs themselves. The general weakening leads to fights over access to the remaining kibble. And it's not just a problem for the dogs at the shelter. The street dogs, whom I also feed, are visibly emaciated.
I don't have the funds to buy more kibble, and this campaign is now my only hope. If it fails, I fear the situation will become truly catastrophic. The difficulties in finding kibble put the future of all these animals at stake. They depend on me to eat, and right now I don't know how to guarantee this basic need for all of them."
"The impact of the kibble shortage on shelter and street dogs is already palpable. The first to suffer are the oldest dogs, or those who were already ill before the shortage. Their immune systems deteriorate rapidly, leaving them vulnerable to disease. They depend on me for food, and without kibble, I don't know how to protect them.
The other immediate consequence is the climate of tension that now reigns among the dogs. Already weakened, they come to violent conflicts over the meager portions remaining. This violence only adds to the list of medical and emotional emergencies I have to deal with. Future rescues of dogs in distress seem almost impossible under these conditions. Without kibble, the shelter itself is threatened, endangering the lives of all the dogs who rely on me!
So there's a vicious circle: the lack of kibble worsens the state of health of the dogs, which in turn is more prone to illness and conflict, requiring more resources than I have. The worst-case scenario, premature death from hunger or disease, is not far off. I fear that without a sufficient supply of kibble, we'll reach a point of no return."
"I've contacted every kibble supplier within my reach, hoping to find a solution to this crisis affecting the dogs dependent on my shelter. The suppliers demand payment in advance, without which the kibble remains out of reach. I tried to negotiate lower prices, but my efforts were in vain. I then turned to the local authorities. Their indifference to the situation was disconcerting.
At the same time, I approached local restaurants and businesses for kibble sponsorship, to no avail. Appeals for help on social networks generated too little commitment to change anything. I've even consulted other shelters for kibble sharing, but they're facing the same shortage. The animals continue to go hungry, and their survival is directly affected by this lack of kibble.
I can't help but think of the impact this shortage is having on the dogs who rely on me. Every day without kibble reduces their chances of survival, and the idea of not being able to feed them profoundly affects the stability of the shelter."
"The pressure is on, every day. Without sufficient financial means, the shelter struggles to provide the dogs with even the most basic needs. Local support is minimal, which makes every day a constant struggle. I've made several pleas for help, hoping that someone would listen. Sometimes an answer comes and it's like being given a breath of oxygen, but these moments are rare.
The love and compassion I feel for these animals fuels my desire to keep going, even when failure and loss seem to win out. Each life saved, while a victory in itself, is also a cruel reminder that if I weren't here, no one else would be. The burden is immense, but the alternative of abandoning these animals to their fate is unthinkable.
In an environment where even basic needs are considered a luxury, every little gesture of support takes on monumental importance. But the hard truth is that if things don't change, everything I've fought for could disappear."
