"We've reached a point where the stock is almost exhausted and what little kibble is left is not of good quality.... The lack of proper kibble is hurting dogs, they're losing weight; it's obvious they're not getting the nutrition they need.
The shortage also makes life more difficult for dogs in other ways. They come to protect the small quantities of kibble that are available. This leads to fights between them, which is really sad to see. Even the arrival of new rescues has to be halted because there isn't enough food to go around. So, not only are the shelter dogs suffering, but we can't help the new dogs who need a safe place either!
The stakes are high. Malnutrition and tension are immediate problems, but the long-term effects will be even more serious. The crisis is getting worse by the day, and we need this shipment of kibble to avoid irreversible consequences!"
"Lack of kibble affects dogs' health. If they don't get the kibble they need quickly, their immunity could weaken dangerously, making them even weaker and more likely to fall ill. If they are injured in fights, they will also take much longer to heal...
Scarcity also affects their future. Weak or sick dogs are statistically less likely to find homes. I'm very anxious, I hardly sleep, because I'm worried about what will happen to them if things don't change...
If we continue on this path, the consequences are terrible. Their life expectancy could decrease, they'll become even more prone to disease and their chances of being adopted will become slim. It's a disastrous situation that's getting worse, each day that the kibble bins remain empty".
"I've organized fundraisers to try and solve the kibble supply problem, but these haven't worked well. Discussions with kibble suppliers to get a better price haven't been successful either. Even the Italian animal protection organization that supports us has its own problems and can't help us as much as we need. I've considered taking out a loan to buy kibble, but we already have a lot of debts for veterinary care, which makes this option too risky.
The dogs depend on me for their food, and at the moment, and so far, all my efforts have come to nothing - I can't provide them with what they need! I'm aware of the heavy responsibility I bear, and every unsuccessful attempt or setback to get more kibble adds a layer of seriousness to an already critical situation."
"Kibble is more than just food in the shelter; it's the backbone that keeps everything running. A dog that doesn't eat well becomes weak, gets sick more easily, and has a hard time recovering from even small injuries. And when a dog arrives at the shelter, the first thing they need is kibble to regain strength and recover from their ailments, be them physical or emotional. If there isn't enough, taking care of these dogs becomes a real challenge.
A consistent supply of kibble is vital for the long-term survival of both the dogs and the shelter itself. The immediate concern is clear: dogs in the shelter today need kibble to stay healthy. But looking ahead, it also complicates the dogs' chances of finding a loving home, and by extension, impacts the longevity of the shelter's mission."
"Navigating through the challenges of running this shelter in Bosnia is far from straightforward. The weight of isolation is palpable; I come up against not only logistical obstacles, but also cultural and societal attitudes that make the mission even more difficult. It's not just a question of saving dogs; it's a fight to change deeply rooted perceptions in a society that doesn't consider these animals worthy of help.
Donors play a crucial role in our fight, providing not only material resources, but also encouragement and reinforcing the value of our mission. Yet this mission is often tinged with sadness, an emotional cost that I accept to pay in order to offer these dogs a haven of peace. This shelter is much more than a temporary solution; it is the fundamental element in preparing these animals for a better life, the springboard they need to be adopted."
