Animal Webaction visited the site 11 November 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"The municipality has not supported us financially this year, which leads to many difficulties. We receive a few private donations from time to time, but it's not something we can rely on, as they fluctuate so much. At the moment, we can't even afford the most basic things, like getting enough kibble! We only have 4 bags left, enough to last until next Monday, maybe Tuesday. The situation is quite alarming...
I'm very stressed about our situation and the impending kibble shortage. Making sure we have enough food is crucial and a daily problem. Sadly, most people don't realize how much kibble we need to feed all the dogs in our care, at the shelter and on the streets!
I'm getting older and very tired, both physically and mentally. Nothing seems to change, it's still the same uphill battle, even after so many years... The cold season is also fast approaching and that just adds another dose of difficulty. Everything becomes more laborious in winter! The cleaning of the boxes, the feeding... We also have to put hay and blankets in the boxes. Some days, I spend my time crying because I don't know what to do. Our dogs deserve to be fed and happy. We rescued them to give them a better life, so I don't want to disappoint them..."
"If we don't solve the kibble problem quickly, dogs could become malnourished, their immune systems weakened and they could fall ill. Dogs that are already vulnerable and weakened would not recover properly, and would be at risk of even more serious health problems. They could die if we don't find a solution... I can't even imagine it, it would be heartbreaking to have to go that far!
The lack of kibble not only affects the immediate health of the dogs, it can also have more far-reaching consequences on the operation of the shelter and its ability to provide the dogs with a happy and comfortable life. Without proper nutrition, our veterinary costs could rise, and this would also have an impact on the chances of adoptions. It puts a lot of pressure on us and everything hinges on the kibble supply!"
"We rescued Fredi from the streets a few years ago. He was malnourished and weak when he arrived, but had grown stronger over time. Unfortunately, he recently suffered a serious health setback. The vet believes he is suffering from both thrombosis and heartworm disease. Although he is receiving injections, his condition remains very worrying... He has no energy, he only sleeps. He needs a lot of care and regular feeding if he is to regain his strength and health. If we don't manage to replenish our stock of kibble, I'm afraid our little Fredi's battle will be lost in advance..."
"We tried to get donations in a variety of ways. We've placed donation boxes at vets, pet shops... These help us raise a little money and cover some of our expenses. Unfortunately, donations are always very sporadic, sometimes we receive more, sometimes less. The people here aren't rich, so donations aren't a priority. We can never really plan ahead.
Right now, we can't cover all the shelter's expenses, because we don't have enough funds available. Some renovation work is on hold, because we have to prioritize the purchase of food and medicines, which we take on credit... Our dogs have to eat every day! So it's a daily problem, and our debts are piling up.
I'd be so happy if I could finally find a sufficient source of money for the shelter, but it seems impossible. It's a constant battle, there's always something coming up... This harvest, I hope, will enable us to provide for the dogs' most immediate and vital need: kibble!"
"There are always more abandoned dogs on the streets. It seems that no matter what I do, there will always be people who don't care about these beautiful animals. I've been involved in this mission for a while now and I know how lonely it can be, but there are so many vulnerable and sick dogs who need my help. I can't stop, I have to keep helping them!
It's hard work, you have to be mentally and physically strong to do it, and you can't be afraid of getting dirty! I'd like to retire and spend more time with my grandchildren, but no one else wants to look after the shelter and the dogs. So even if I'm sick or tired, I'm there and I look after them. I can't abandon them, they don't deserve to suffer. They deserve to be happy!"
