Animal Webaction visited the site 03 December 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"At the moment there are over 200 dogs relying on me between the shelter, the streets and the municipal dump, where their numbers are constantly increasing. Just yesterday, I found two litters of puppies and many dogs I'd never seen before, which are not sterilized... At the moment, I can't afford to set up catch, neuter and release programs, or take in more dogs at the shelter. I can't even afford to buy kibble!
At the shelter, the dogs are malnourished and visibly losing weight. In the streets and especially at the dump, the situation is disastrous. The dogs are getting weaker, some have developed diseases, others have died... Fights between them are also becoming increasingly frequent.
The harsh Macedonian winter adds to the urgency of the situation. Lacking sufficient food, the dogs struggle to maintain their body temperature; their survival becomes more precarious every day... The fear that they won't make it haunts me constantly!"
"The shortage of kibble is of growing concern to me, both for the immediate and long-term effects it can have on dogs. I'm seeing a worrying trend in weight loss, which is affecting not only their physical strength, but also their ability to cope with harsh winter conditions.
Without adequate nutrition, their ability to recover from illness is considerably weakened, making them all the more vulnerable. This situation is particularly alarming for street and rubbish dump dogs, who already face many difficulties in surviving on a daily basis!
This situation threatens not only their health and well-being, but also their very survival. The multiple dangers that dogs face in the face of this shortage cannot be overlooked... This delivery of kibble is vital for everyone!"
"Despite relentless efforts to find donors and kibble, our progress has stalled. Even though our actions have been relayed in the media, all this attention has not translated into the tangible help we desperately need. Our appeals on social networks, where we hoped to find a wider audience ready to contribute, have not yielded the expected results. Despite touching reactions and widespread sharing, the contributions received remain insufficient.
Our attempts to forge partnerships with local kibble suppliers and veterinarians have been unsuccessful. Even our efforts to obtain international aid have failed to remedy the kibble shortage.
The situation is critical. Although we have exhausted all possibilities, we are faced with a sad reality: the dogs depend on us for their livelihood, and the current shortage of kibble poses a serious threat to their survival."
"The lack of kibble means we can't save any new animals, as we simply don't have enough food for everyone. So funds that were previously allocated to medical care are now diverted to acquiring all the kibble we can find. In other words, we've gone into survival mode... all other needs must be abandoned.
This shortage seriously compromises our ability to rehabilitate and rehome dogs. Potential adopters often hesitate when they see dogs in poorer health. What's more, with so much time devoted to managing the kibble crisis, we have less time for essential activities such as interaction with the dogs and socialization, which are crucial to their well-being and adoptability.
The emotional toll of this situation is very heavy. Seeing dogs go hungry day after day affects me deeply and calls into question our long-term strategy for animal welfare. The ongoing struggle to meet the immediate kibble needs of these animals casts a shadow over our future plans and efforts."
"My days are devoted to defending the countless abandoned dogs that roam our streets and occupy the city's landfills. Every day I am confronted with the overwhelming reality of their needs, which often leaves me feeling helpless. This constant struggle to obtain resources to support these animals is both physically and emotionally exhausting. Witnessing the suffering of these animals every day is a harsh reality that never gets easier to bear.
My efforts are not limited to providing care; they highlight the dire situation of dogs living in unthinkable conditions, particularly those living in city rubbish tips. Despite the emotional toll this rescue work takes on me, I persist, driven by a deep commitment to these animals. However, the heartbreaking reality of not being able to help all the dogs in need is a constant burden. Added to this is the apparent lack of public interest and support, which makes the battle even harder.
As I face these challenges every day, I am reminded of the resilience of these animals and the crucial importance of my mission. Although the path is fraught with obstacles, the determination to make a difference for these dogs drives me to persevere."
