Animal Webaction visited the site 17 December 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"We currently have 119 dogs in our care at the shelter. As the locals don't sterilize their dogs, they abandon the puppies in front of our doors... We feel like we're going round in circles: 5 dogs are adopted - 20 abandoned puppies arrive here, there's no balance. People feel sorry when it comes to sterilizing their dogs, but feel no remorse when they abandon their puppies, go figure...
These uncontrolled abandonments worsen our financial situation, as we have to provide more food and vaccinations for each new dog... The list goes on and on. The problem is that the pandemic is over, but we're still suffering the consequences. Everything has become more expensive - kibbles, bills, medicines, veterinary services... while our donations remain low.
Our stock of kibble is dwindling, which is really worrying! The dogs' kennels aren't insulated enough, and winter is setting in... We're really afraid our dogs will suffer from the cold... We desperately need this delivery of kibble so that our dogs can cope with the harsh winter ahead!"
"Dogs are eating poor-quality kibble. This is another consequence of the pandemic... We've been buying the same brand of kibble for about 1.5 years now, but the quality has gone way down (color, consistency...), while the price has gone up! The quality is very poor. Some of the dogs have digestive problems, diarrhea, vomiting, allergies...
We're worried about the dogs' health. One of our dogs even had a stomach tumor, and we don't know if it's linked to the lack of nutrition... Seeing the dogs suffer really makes us sad.
With winter coming, dogs need to be well fed! If we can't find a way to give them a more nutritious diet, their health problems are likely to get worse. And given our meagre financial means, we fear that soon we won't have enough kibble at all, even poor-quality kibble..."
"The donations we receive are unfortunately not enough to cover all our needs. Kibbles have become much more expensive since COVID and it seems that people aren't necessarily aware of these price variations. In addition to kibble, we also have to have new dogs sterilized, examined by the vet and vaccinated. All these services are now prohibitively expensive...
We're in debt for kibble and veterinary services. We already owe around €3,500 to the vet... We're running out of resources, we don't have enough money to buy better kibble, and at the same time we can't abandon the new dogs that keep arriving at our shelter, we have to take care of them too...
We've started posting some of the dogs in distress on our page, to get more help and draw attention to the problem of abandoned dogs in Macedonia. We hope this will work and that we'll soon have more sponsorships. In the meantime, we really need a helping hand so that our dogs can face the winter serenely..."
"There are two of us at the shelter: Marija and me. We both have the same role: looking after the dogs, cleaning the shelter, taking the dogs to the vet, giving them vaccinations... all on a daily basis. It's hard to stay motivated given the situation of abandoned dogs in Macedonia. But every time we see a dog get better and be healthy, or more importantly be adopted, it inspires us and gives us energy to continue rescuing other dogs in our area.
Most of our dogs are adopted from abroad, but recently a local woman adopted one of our dogs. She was very grateful! From her point of view, we trusted her enough to give her the dog to look after. When we see people happy with our dogs, we're a little happier too!
Unfortunately, most people here don't understand that a dog isn't a toy you can just get rid of when you're bored. The acquisition of a pet implies responsibility. But as there are many irresponsible owners, we're here to accept the consequences... We can only hope that, in time, our actions will have a ripple effect and that people will become aware of the importance of sterilization and animal welfare in general."
