Animal Webaction visited the site 28 December 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"There are currently 168 cats in our shelter, and we are also looking after a further 150 cats on the city's streets. Financially, we're on the brink of collapse. Our resources and donations are no longer enough to cover the purchase of kibble. We are accumulating debts with our vet and our kibble supplier, and the shelter's charges remain unpaid...
Against this backdrop, it has become very difficult to provide for our cats' needs. At present, we only have three days' worth of kibble left! At the refuge, we've had to reduce our portions, desperately trying to make the little we have last. On the streets, the situation is even more critical. Because we can't provide them with kibble, the cats have to survive by eating leftovers, which worsens their already precarious state of health...
We can't afford to save any more cats either; the shortage of kibble is preventing us from doing so... I fear the worst... Only this campaign will enable us to get our heads above water and guarantee these cats a future!"
"The cats at the refuge, many of whom arrived here weakened, ill or injured, are suffering more and more. The lack of kibble affects their health: they lose weight, their energy levels drop and their resistance to viruses weakens. Every day without kibble increases the risk of serious illness, and reduces the chances of recovery for the weakest...
Unfortunately, the impact of this shortage of kibble goes far beyond our shelter and affects each cat individually. On the streets, cats are left to fend for themselves. We can no longer feed them properly and we are forced to stop rescues because we don't have enough resources. Decisions like this are heartbreaking, but we have no other choice. The situation is such that even those under our protection are at risk of losing their lives! This shortage leaves us powerless and worried for the future of all the cats who rely on us..."
"The search for kibble for our cats has become a constant battle. Despite our appeals for donations on social networks, the response remains insufficient to cover the cats' needs. Our attempts at sponsorship and the creation of donation boxes in local shops have not had the hoped-for impact either, leaving a gap that is difficult to fill.
Efforts to establish partnerships with local restaurants to recover leftover food have not borne fruit either. Similarly, our requests for subsidies have gone unanswered. This series of setbacks makes us even more worried... Our ability to feed our cats properly is dwindling, putting their health at risk. The well-being of our animals, which used to be at the heart of our mission, is now threatened by a situation that we are struggling to control!"
"The shortage of kibble limits our ability to feed the cats we take in and also hampers our daily rounds to feed the street cats. In addition, our ability to monitor their health during our rounds is compromised, as it is often at these times that we identify health problems. The lack of kibble therefore also seriously undermines our efforts to prevent disease among the stray population.
Worse still, the lack of kibble prevents us from maintaining our sterilisation programme for street cats, which is crucial to controlling their population and improving their quality of life. Without adequate food, these cats cannot recover from surgery, making the programme ineffective...
Without kibble, we are also unable to continue rescues at present. We see cats in distress every day, and it's heartbreaking to have to turn them away because we can't afford to feed them... Our support for these animals, who already have a difficult life, weakens dramatically without kibble. The future and sustainability of our project and our mission are threatened."
"Animal protection requires constant commitment, both emotionally and physically. The financial challenges are immense and seeing animals suffer on a daily basis is a very difficult ordeal. But by caring for, feeding and protecting these animals, I feel that I have been entrusted with a mission that, although invisible, is crucial for our society.
This role goes beyond the shelter; it's about raising public awareness of the animal cause, of the importance of these creatures in our community. Every cat we save is another step towards a more harmonious environment, where humans and animals co-exist respectfully. These successes, however small, are the driving force behind our daily fight. Every cat back on its feet is a victory!
Every day spent at the refuge reinforces my conviction that our work is essential, not only for the cats we help directly but also for raising awareness and protecting an entire community."
Animal Webaction has a logistical platform in Morocco, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
