In France, one household in two has a pet. With prices continuing to rise and a drastic fall in purchasing power, more and more people are struggling to feed their pets. Excluding the cost of care and unforeseen veterinary problems, it currently costs an average of €650 a year to provide food for a dog or cat - €200 more than before!
Households that were already struggling in this respect find themselves in a critical situation: many pet owners say they have to deprive themselves in order to continue to feed their pet. Some people are even forced to abandon their four-legged friends...
If the most disadvantaged were hoping for a return to normal in the cost of kibble, this is not to be. Not only are pet food prices not going to fall, they're going to keep rising! Within the next year, the raw materials from which this food is produced are likely to rise sharply... In addition to rising production costs, there is a shortage of food proteins due to avian flu.
Naïs Venanzi, who runs a shelter in the Sarthe region of France, laments that "because of inflation, they [pet owners] can no longer make ends meet". In an economic climate where rising prices are weighing ever more heavily on households, many families are having to cut their leisure and outings budgets as much as possible. For many, their pet is a source of joy and a significant support in overcoming isolation in these difficult times... Having to part with them is a real heartbreak, but some owners have no choice!
Due to a lack of funds, many private individuals no longer sterilise their pets. It's a vicious circle: the population of free cats is constantly increasing! Many dogs are also abandoned, to the point where the associations are overloaded. Many of them have contacted us to inform us that they have to stop taking in animals, or simply close down...
The number of animals awaiting adoption is also increasing. "The situation remains critical in our shelters, which currently have 7,994 animals, 191 more than last year", warns the SPA. As a result, individuals no longer know where to turn if they want to keep their pets. Adoptions, meanwhile, are down sharply: having a pet is now a luxury that few people can afford! So the number of animals left behind is growing, and there's no sign of any improvement on the horizon...
Over the last few months, many concerned Internet users have asked for our help to support pet owners in precarious situations. We've set up this fund-raising campaign to give them a helping hand that will change their lives and the lives of their four-legged companions.
By easing the financial burden that kibble represents on their budget, we hope to enable these people to keep their pets close to them. The task is doubly complex: the number of individuals in financial difficulty is constantly increasing, while donations are falling dramatically...
A special campaign, intended for food banks and associations that help the underprivileged. Thanks to its logistics platform, Animal Webaction can intervene and deliver kibble quickly in France.
If you represent a food bank and need help to support your beneficiaries and their animals, submit a request here.
- The kibble will be delivered to a food bank and reserved for needy individuals (means-tested).
- We will publish delivery photos.
- If the kibble is not distributed within 30 days, all purchases made on this campaign will be refunded.
