Animal Webaction visited the site 20 January 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"The number of dogs in our care has increased recently; we have a lot of puppies. On the one hand, that's a good thing - it means that people are becoming more aware and instead of dumping puppies in the wild or on the streets, they're bringing them to our shelter. But it adds to our existing difficulties: we're at capacity, we don't have suitable kennels for puppies in this cold weather and our stock of kibble is running out even faster...
Our purchasing power has collapsed: all prices have doubled or tripled, so we're really being hit by inflation. At the moment, we're giving the dogs poor quality kibble and old bread - that's all we manage to buy. Dogs are not eating well! They need more food to cope with this cold weather, but we don't have enough...
Our main problem is the lack of funding, nothing else... I'm determined, I know where to buy kibble, but I don't have the means to do it... Our expectations are modest. We're just hoping for warmer days and a new supply of kibble, that's all... I don't know what we'll do if we don't get your help, God forbid... It would be a huge disaster. For the dogs and for me!"
"Over the last few weeks, we've had sub-zero temperatures every day. The cold is a huge problem at the shelter. We have straw to try and keep the dogs warm, but the kennels are open on all sides, so the insulation isn't very good. In this weather, the only thing that really helps dogs to keep their body heat is a good diet... And that's the thing we have the hardest time providing!
Many dogs lose weight because of this unsuitable diet. We also have a lot of puppies and older dogs at the refuge who could really do with some special kibble. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funds, all our dogs are fed the same diet: cheap kibbles and hard bread... In the long term, this diet will have repercussions on the health of all of them! I'm really worried about an upsurge in disease...
I'm frustrated, I don't have the words to describe my state of mind. I can't sleep at night, I'm worried 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I do everything I can for the dogs, but man as an individual can't do anything on his own. I need the help and support of anyone who can give it to me, in any way, because the dogs rely on me to feed them and survive..."
"We never have secure funding; our donations fluctuate enormously. For example, during the end-of-year period, we received slightly more donations than usual. But that was just the festive season, unfortunately that trend doesn't last...
Kibble is our most expensive item. Prices are exorbitant and our finances are lacking... We have the greatest difficulty providing our dogs with this most basic and essential item!
We're always in debt. We currently owe around €1,000 for kibble and over €700 for veterinary care... It's impossible for us to plan anything. We need more facilities and renovation work at the shelter, but with our lack of funds and our debts, this is just a distant dream... Right now, the most important thing for me is to manage to feed my dogs this winter!"
"I set up this shelter around 18 years ago and, unfortunately, I can say that the situation for abandoned dogs has remained unchanged since the beginning. The situation is horrible. There are a lot of stray dogs on the streets and nobody looks after them. A small number of people sometimes feed them, but not regularly, and the government doesn't care. Unfortunately, any dogs left on the streets are very likely to be caught and killed, as this is still common practice here...
We're the only people in our region who rescue dogs from the streets. We don't just help them to survive, we also try to improve their lives. So that they are loved and honoured as they deserve to be! Over the years, we've managed to find new homes for these dogs, and I'm very proud of that. When I receive photos of adopted dogs with their new families, it's the greatest motivation for me, it keeps me going!
I'm older and I have health problems, but my determination is still the same as when I set up this shelter. There's a real love between me and these dogs, I want to help them and I'll always do my best to do so."
