Animal Webaction visited the site 27 January 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"At our shelter, the reality is stark. We're home to 600 dogs, each one relying on us for their next meal, while our kibble supply is running dangerously low: we have enough left for just five days.
The kibble we did have until now is of low quality, and I see its impact on the dogs' health every day, they are not strong enough to face a kibble shortage. Winter's harshness only makes our situation more urgent, and we've already been forced to make a heart-wrenching decision: we cannot rescue any more dogs.
As our stock runs out, my concern escalates. I find myself searching desperately for a solution, but the critical level of our kibble supply is a constant reminder of the urgency we're facing."
"The thought of running out of kibble is terrifying, not just for the immediate hunger it would bring, but for the long-term damage it could inflict on the dogs' health. Without kibble, their immune system would weaken, leaving them vulnerable to illness and slower to recover, they could suffer irreversible harm.
Fights would also break out more frequently, leading to injuries or even worse, we simply cannot take that risk in a shelter with so many dogs. And we would definitly see a surge in medical emergencies, making the situation and our capacity to overcome it even worse.
The implications are dire, the lack of kibble threatens to push our shelter into a crisis, one where the health and safety of our dogs are at grave risk."
"I have not stopped searching for more kibble, from organizing local fundraising events to setting up kibble collection points at supermarkets, calling for help on social media etc... Unfortunately, the response has been minimal.
We have debts at the vet station already and cannot afford to buy anymore kibble, that is just not an option. I refuse to give up, I cannot give up, but each failed attempt makes me feel a little more helpless. The struggle to find enough kibble is a constant battle for us, one that we are currently losing."
"Having enough kibble is not just a way to keep everybody fed, it is about sustaining our mission to save and care for these dogs, and to keep rescuing new ones in difficulty.
Our resources are stretched thin, and the lack of kibble make our daily operations almost impossible, while putting a huge strain on us. This situation is dire, and putting everything we've worked for at rist."
"In Bosnia, resources for shelters like ours are scarce, and the needs are enormous. Despite all the difficulties, my dedication to the welfare of abandoned dogs never wavers. I feel a deep sense of duty towards these dogs, and find strength in the faces on the ones we've already managed to help.
However, the responsibility to care for them weighs heavily on me, and I hope that we can overcome the challenges together."
