Animal Webaction visited the site 16 February 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"I care for 70 dogs in my shelter, but also provide for about 200 more on the streets and at the public dump, where dogs are being dumped in awful conditions. Right now, my kibble stock is critically low, which prevents me from rescuing any new dog, and will soon prevent me from feeding the ones I already care for.
Each day, I carefully monitor the amount of kibble I distribute with growing concern, as I can see already that dogs are beginning to lose weight, the weaker ones are struggling even more, and fights are becoming more frequent. Diseases are also spreading more rapidly among those living outside.
Witnessing the suffering of strays at the dump and on the street, without being able to help them out is awful enough as it is ; not knowing if I'll be able to feed any of them tomorrow is even worse, we really need kibble urgently."
"The living conditions for strays on the streets, and even more so at the dump, are heartbreakingly tough, and have already claimed several lives. If I cannot bring them kibble anymore, their chances of survival will drop sharply: those scavenging at the dump will face a high risk of getting poisoned while trying to fend for themselves, and those on the streets might also put themselves in dangerous situations while looking for food. At the end of the day, they will all face starvation, diseases and will need to fight each other only to barely survive.
Thinking this could happen, that I might not be able to prevent more deaths is very difficult. If I cannot feed nor rescue them anymore, the vulnerable ones stand no chance, and the suffering they would all face is unbearable."
"I've sought donations far and wide, I've called for help, attempted to establish partnerships, kibble banks, monthly subscription for food, yet the kibble shortage remains a critical issue. Over the past year, I've contacted countless businesses to get support, and only managed to have three companies help me for a few hundred euros a year, which is very little, as without even counting strays, I need 60 kg of food per day for dogs at the shelter only!
There is no support whatsoever from the local authorities, and although I receive the moral support from many animal lovers, their resources are stretched thin and they cannot solve the problem I'm facing. I feel more and more overwhelmed as my appeals go unanswered, leaving me desperate for a solution."
"The kibble shortage is severely impacting my ability to rescue and care for abandoned dogs. The search for kibble consumes all my time and resources, I am heavily stressed, cannot plan for the future. I am forced to make difficult decisions every day, there is no way I can gain the trust of wary street dogs or proceed with spay and neuter efforts, that are so crucial.
The lack of kibble not only affects the dogs' health, but also risks them being seen as a threat by local authorities and the community, which threatens even more my mission to protect these dogs, and everything I've managed to set up for them over the last few years."
"I bear the responsibility of these dogs, with only a handfull of volunteers to help me, and although I face an incredible amount of challenges, I know that what I do is a lifeline for them. I do not only bring them food, medicine and shelter, I bring compassion to their desperate conditions, and hope for a better future for them.
Everything I do sheds light on the critical need for support in the forgotten corners of my country for animal welfare, and I do believe that my actions play a part in allowing the community to see the value in every stray and dumped dog. Despite the scarcity of support which can be frustrating and makes things more difficult, the moments of joy I share with the dogs I manage to help keep me want to keep fighting."
