Animal Webaction visited the site 24 February 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"Between my shelter and the dogs I care for on the street, I am responsible for the lives of more than 120 dogs, which is quite a heavy task. I've had to cut down on how much I feed them as my kibble stock was getting lower and lower, but this can only be a temporary fix, since I only have 4 days of kibble left at that stage.
The dogs are not getting enough to eat already, leading to noticeable weight loss and signs of malnutrition. Their health is declining, with the weakest ones suffering the most, and I am deeply worried as buying more kibble is not an option I can afford, so I don't see and end to this situation.
Things can only get worse if I don't manage to find kibble. These dogs count on me each day, it is critical to find a way to keep feeding them, cause otherwise no one will. "
"I'm unable to rescue any more dogs, and with the imminent shortage I very soon won't even be able to bring them any relief at all, as I won't be able to feed them either. This means many will be left to fend for themselves, facing harsh conditions with little hope.
The struggle for food and water would become more desperate, which would result in more fights over the few scraps available. They would starve, there is no other way to put it, and that thought devastates me.
It's a lonely battle for them, and the gap between my desire to help and what I'm actually able to do is painful. I feel helpless facing this crisis."
"I've attempted to negotiate with suppliers, to convince local businesses and veterinary partners to help out, but to no avail. My pleas on social media and to the local authorities have gone unanswered, efforts to secure grants haven't worked out either. I've managed to set up collection points around the city, but it's not enough.
I'm constantly searching for solutions, any possible way to help me solve this crisis, but no matter how hard I try, the situation remains desperate and the crisis persists. I'm exhausted from hitting dead end after dead end, but I have no other choice than to keep trying, because these dogs' survival depends on it."
"A kibble shortage threatens everything, as it means I can't support dogs in distress, and I can't care for the ones I've taken under my wing, I can't even continue rehabilitating them for adoption, and the general operation of my rescue is at risk.
Years of progress in the area for animals could be undone, and my ability to support the community and control the stray population humanely is directly threatened. Most people ignore the plight of strays, they don't see them as their responsibility. I cannot turn a blind eye.
I made a promise to protect these dogs, and the idea of not being able to keep that promise is something I can't face, finding a way to get more kibble is crucial."
"Fighting for animal welfare in Serbia is both a daunting and very rewarding task. Seeing all these animals left to fend for themselves pushes me to act and to work harder, to make a difference for them. Most people don't realise it, but it makes a difference for them as well, as I keep the stray population under control, and make sure these dogs stay safe from hunger and diseases.
To have so many living beings who rely on me on a day to day basis, every single day of the year, can be overwhelming at times ; the lack of support, lack of recognition and the increasing number in animals in need add to the difficulty of it all. Still, I would do it all over again for the sake of these dogs if I had to."
