Animal Webaction visited the site 31 March 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"Our kibble stock is melting away, and this situation is pushing us to the limit. For the past week, we've had to cut back on the amount of kibble at the shelter. The cats are already starting to lose weight...
At the same time, the street cats are surviving as best they can on the few scraps of food and offal we manage to give them. Their already worrying state of malnutrition only worsens without regular access to kibble. It's a vicious circle: the less they eat, the weaker they are, and the less able they are to forage for food on their own!
Under these conditions, no new rescue can be envisaged at the shelter. Not being able to reach out to a cat in distress, for lack of means to feed it, is unbearable... But the worst thing about all this is the uncertainty. In 3 days, I won't have any kibble at all, and no way of getting any if this campaign fails..."
"The situation is becoming increasingly precarious for the cats at the shelter and those we help on the streets. Lack of nutrition weakens their immune systems, the risk of spreading disease increases, and their ability to heal diminishes...
Increased competition for food is also a major concern. Tensions rise as the bags of kibble are emptied... I'm afraid that fights will multiply and take a tragic turn! Some of the most vulnerable cats may not survive if this trend continues.
I feel deeply responsible for all the cats in my care. Every day, I dread finding cats that haven't survived... Their decline would, in my eyes, be my fault! The situation demands that we find a solution before it's definitely too late for them..."
"Between the cats at the shelter and those we care for on the streets, our kibble requirements are enormous. I struggle daily to try and get help, but my efforts seem to be in vain... Appeals for donations on social media have failed to find an audience, and our requests for grants have been turned down one after the other. I've also tried to recuperate unsold foodstuffs, hoping to alleviate our need for kibble, but these efforts have proved fruitless.
We organized open days at the shelter, hoping to attract potential donors and show them first-hand the impact of their generosity. Meetings were also held with the town hall, to no avail. Despite our efforts, all the doors were closed... I feel like I'm fighting this battle alone, and that weighs heavily on me. Each failure undermines my hopes a little more. I've reached an impasse, and I know I can't get out of it on my own..."
"The instability of our situation forces us to make difficult choices... We can't take in new cats in distress, the priority being to feed the animals already in our care. Sterilization programs have also been put on hold, even though they are essential to prevent the situation of stray cats from worsening.
Our efforts to maintain the health of the cats in our shelter and on the streets are proving increasingly complicated. When veterinary care is not accompanied by good nutrition, it is no longer enough... Beyond their obvious role in maintaining cats' health, kibbles also help to socialize them, which boosts their chances of being adopted. People always prefer animals that are healthy and not frightened...
The lack of kibble triggers a domino effect, undermining all our efforts on behalf of these cats. It not only affects the immediate health of our protégés, but also undermines our long-term efforts to integrate them into loving homes. The fragile balance we have worked so hard to establish is in jeopardy..."
"My commitment to animals isn't just about providing shelter and care; it's also about building bridges between these voiceless beings and local communities. Through awareness programs, especially on the importance of spaying and neutering, I aspire to create lasting change. Our catch, neuter and release programs not only reduce the number of stray animals, but also promote harmonious cohabitation between humans and animals.
My approach also includes ongoing dialogue with local authorities to bring about legislative and practical change. The challenges are considerable, but I strive to be positive, convinced that every small step is a step towards a better future for these animals. The gratitude I see in the eyes of the rescued animals is my most precious reward..."
