""I barely have enough kibble left to last for 2 days. Donations are very low, just like my salary! It is extremely difficult for me to meet the needs of the dogs I am currently caring for, whether at the shelter or on the streets.
The kibble I managed to get is of very poor quality, but it's all I could afford. At the shelter, I have had to reduce portions for several days now. As for the stray dogs, they have to make do with scraps of food picked up here and there.
The dogs are hungry - none of them are eating enough! Without this delivery of kibble, a disaster awaits us."
"This kibble shortage makes me fear the worst, especially for the stray dogs. Hunger will drive them to venture further and further, risking being poisoned by exasperated residents. I speak from experience, unfortunately...
At the shelter, I will have to completely stop rescues, even for dogs in distress. I already have many injured dogs but I have to delay their operations due to lack of funds. The health of the dogs under my roof is at stake... This is really not a conducive situation for new admissions! Ifear the situation will quickly become uncontrollable if this campaign fails..."
"I've tried everything. I've contacted all the associations, knocked on all the doors: in vain. Serbia is a relatively poor country and the shelters, too numerous, share the meager resources available.
I organized collections in front of supermarkets, but people pass by, indifferent. Some cast an embarassed look, others turn their eyes away. I make calls for donations on social media, I share photos of the dogs, I tell their stories. A few 'likes,' a few shares, but the donations are slow to come. It's very difficult.
I even had to sell some of my personal belongings to try to gather some money. But it's not enough. I have debts everywhere: at the vet, the kibble supplier... Everyone is demanding payment! I am alone facing this situation, and no one is able to help me."
"I always have to juggle between my main job and my commitment to the animals. I devote all my free time and my holidays to doing something for them. I try to save as much as possible, I look for donations, I seek assistance, I fight to find kibble...
The lack of kibble directly impacts my actions. I can no longer take in new dogs in distress, I have to reduce portions, I can't properly treat sick or injured dogs.
I also have to deal with the sadness and frustration of not being able to do more, of not being able to help all the dogs that need me. I can't promise them a better future when the present is so uncertain!"
"In Serbia, shelters are often seen as a burden, a regrettable necessity rather than a heartfelt mission. People struggle to make ends meet, so taking care of abandoned animals seems like a luxury. I fight every day, often in indifference, sometimes even hostility.
But every time I see the joy in the eyes of an adopted dog, every time I receive a thank-you message from a family, I tell myself it's worth it. These small victories, these saved lives, are my driving force.
It's what gives me the strength to continue, just as knowing that a few people, even distant ones, care about the fate of my protégés. This support, modest as it may be, is a glimmer of hope!"
