Animal Webaction visited the site 26 June 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"Tangier overflows with people during the summer, making the coexistence between the stray dogs in the city center and the population very difficult. To keep them safe, we have retrieved 200 of our identified dogs and brought them to the sanctuary.
We are housing 850 dogs in total! We are also responsible for another 100 stray dogs on the outskirts of the city. The situation is critical; I don’t know how we will get through the summer! The arrival of all these new dogs has put enormous pressure on our resources.
Our kibble stock is melting like snow in the sun; I have already had to start reducing portions! The dogs are losing weight, our debts are skyrocketing, and the price of kibble keeps rising... We are at a crossroads... We need help, and we need it now!"
"With 200 additional dogs in the shelter, the competition will become fierce without kibble. I am terrified at the thought of fights breaking out. These dogs have already suffered so much - the last thing they need is to feel threatened in what should be their safe haven!
I also worry a lot about the dogs on the streets - if we can’t feed them, they will venture into the city center, putting themselves in danger and preventing us from providing the protection and care they need. They risk being hit by cars, poisoned, captured by the authorities...
I spend sleepless nights, my mind filled with worst-case scenarios. These dogs depend entirely on me; the thought of them suffering is unbearable! How could I look them in the eyes if I don’t have enough to fill their bowls tomorrow?"
"I have tried everything to get kibble. I contacted all the local suppliers, pleaded my case, and asked for extended credit terms. But with the economic recession, they simply can’t take the risk.
I went door-to-door, soliciting donations from businesses, but everyone is struggling right now. I applied for grants, but the process is slow, and time is a luxury I don’t have.
I organized an emergency online fundraiser, hoping my supporters abroad could help. Although I received some donations, the amount collected barely covers a week of food. Despite my efforts, help for kibble is scarce, and with almost 1000 dogs to care for, our needs are immense... I am running out of options!"
"The dogs are my reason to get up every morning. They need me as much as I need them! They give me the strength to continue, even when everything seems against us. Unfortunately, in Morocco, that’s most of the time...
The fight for animal welfare is very difficult here. Cultural attitudes towards stray animals, economic challenges... everything is amplified. Seeing animals suffer, knowing there are so many others we can’t help, is extremely trying.
Fortunately, there are also small victories. Watching an animal that has only known cruelty transform and relearn to trust and love is an invaluable reward! These animals are my babies; they deserve the best, and I will continue to do my best for them, no matter the personal cost."
