Inflation is eroding the purchasing power of the French. According to the Observatory of Inequalities, nearly 9 million people are now living below the poverty line! Pet food, once a staple accessible to everyone, has become a luxury that many now struggle to afford...
Some owners must choose between feeding themselves or their pets. For others, the impossible budgetary equation forces them to give up their companion animals...
For these animals, abandonment means stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Torn from their homes and familiar surroundings, they find themselves on the streets or in shelters, plunged into an unknown environment, surrounded by other frightened, disoriented animals...
It's a sad reality that no longer just occurs in the summer: more and more pets are being abandoned in France! In total, nearly 200,000 animals are left behind each year... A phenomenon that continues to grow.
Volunteers and shelter employees unanimously report that economic reasons for pet abandonments are on the rise, now overshadowing the once "classic" reasons such as misunderstanding the animal's needs or lack of time...
Shelters, already at capacity, struggle to accommodate the continuous influx of forsaken animals. The kennels fill up, resources dwindle, and the devoted but overwhelmed staff fight to provide a minimum of comfort and attention to each animal. In some regions of France, the situation has become so dire that shelters have established a waiting list for abandonments!
Between food, veterinary expenses, grooming, or insurance, the annual cost of keeping a pet is weighing increasingly heavily on the budgets of the French.
While a hamster might cost about 300 euros over its lifetime, the average cost for a dog or cat approaches 10,000 euros! And that's not even counting the costs of care and accidents that can occur throughout the animal's life...
Not surprisingly, food tops the list of expenses. The average annual budget for pet food is now 643 euros, which is a 201 euros increase compared to 2020. These routine expenses have now become unaffordable for many people...
In recent months, many concerned internet users have reached out to us seeking help for pet owners in precarious situations. In response to this distress, we have decided to take action.
Today, we are launching this kibble campaign. Our goal is to provide support, however modest, to both the animals and their struggling owners.
Every bag collected will help to lighten the financial burden on these individuals' shoulders and offer a respite to our four-legged friends... The task is immense, the number of people in difficulty continues to rise, while donations are becoming scarcer!
A special campaign, intended for food banks and associations that help the underprivileged. Thanks to its logistics platform, Animal Webaction can intervene and deliver kibble quickly in France.
If you represent a food bank and need help to support your beneficiaries and their animals, please submit a request here.
