Animal Webaction visited the site 10 October 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"I barely have 3 or 4 bags of kibble left, enough to last two days at most. The problem is, people keep bringing in more and more dogs to the shelter. And more dogs mean more food, more care...
But donations aren’t increasing. People either don’t give or give very little. It’s incredibly difficult to get more kibble. Every month, it’s the same story. I go through all the emotions: frustration, exasperation, but above all, worry for my dogs and despair...
At the shelter, we’ve had to start rationing for about ten days now. The dogs aren’t getting enough to eat. And the worst part is that most of them are sick or disabled. They are very fragile... Any lack of food seriously jeopardizes their recovery, and even their survival. So, if this kibble collection fails, it will be a disaster waiting to happen."
"When I found Loki, he had just been hit by a car. He had several fractures in his leg, and unfortunately, we had to amputate.
Despite everything, he is such a sweet dog. He’s incredibly gentle, whether with people or other animals. But he’s still very fragile.
He’s underweight and needs to gain weight to fully recover. He’s far too vulnerable to survive a kibble shortage..."
"We take care of about a hundred dogs on the streets of Marrakech, and their living conditions are really tough. People don’t feed them, so they have to scavenge through garbage to find food. They have nowhere to shelter, and the worst part is that the city authorities are hunting them down...
Our kibble distributions are vital for them. It’s their only support, really. But we’re desperately short. It’s been about a month now that we haven’t been able to feed them properly. We give them scraps when we can, but it’s very irregular, both in quantity and frequency… It’s a real struggle.
We absolutely need to get more kibble to protect them. Otherwise, they’ll start fighting amongst themselves, causing issues for residents, and the culling will begin again... They won’t survive!"
"I don’t have a job anymore. I used to fund the shelter with my own income, but now I have none. Honestly, I don’t know how much longer we can keep going like this. Between kibble, canned food, vet care, and medicine, we’re in debt everywhere. We’re constantly looking for funds to support the shelter, but nothing comes through.
Donations are very low: a few in-kind donations, 140 Teamers... it’s not enough. Adoptions are rare because most of the dogs are disabled, which doesn’t help either. We’ve had to cut back on everything: rescues and sterilizations of street dogs are on hold. We used to run large campaigns every two or three months, but that’s over. There’s also a lot of work to be done at the shelter, but everything is at a standstill. It’s really tough.
If we don’t get more support, we’ll have to stop everything. Ten years of hard work wiped out... We have a shelter of over two hectares with 400 animals, including dogs and cats. Without the actions of our association, hundreds of lives will be at risk..."
"The suffering of animals in my country... that’s what pushed me to get involved 10 years ago. It’s also what keeps me going today, because they still need help, and because we’ve built something really special for them.
Our association is active and plays a crucial role in the region. We provide care for many animals, carry out rescues. Thanks to our work, there are fewer dead animals in the streets, and the overpopulation problem is less severe.
What we really need now to make a lasting change is more concrete support from the authorities! Real measures need to be taken, especially regarding the sterilization of the stray population (TNVR), and they must stop the culling. One day, maybe... We truly hope it will become a thing of the past."
