Animal Webaction visited the site 27 October 2024 and confirms the situation described below.
"Our situation is only getting worse: more and more dogs are being abandoned, with people leaving them at the shelter overnight! Donations have become increasingly rare. We're struggling to provide kibble, let alone cover other expenses like vet care, repairs, and the exorbitant rent — and we don’t even have electricity. Financially and emotionally, we are at our limit.
The only kibble we can afford is of poor quality, and we've been cutting portions for weeks because our supplies are dwindling. Our dogs are suffering: their immune systems are weakening, their teeth are deteriorating, their coats are dulling, and even their spirits are low...
Winter is coming with its own challenges, we are very worried about what's ahead. Feeding our dogs is becoming nearly impossible. This is the reality: I’m exhausted, deeply worried, and I feel like I’m stumbling in the dark. The success of this campaign is our only lifeline..."
"The lack of kibble is weighing heavily on our dogs. Tensions are rising — nervousness and aggression are beginning to spread throughout the shelter. If we don’t get kibble, we risk a downward spiral: their health will deteriorate even more, and they’ll start fighting for crumbs...
This is a real crisis, and without enough kibble, we won’t be able to stop it. I’m deeply worried; just thinking about it makes my stomach churn! It’s a matter of life and death, plain and simple. Full bellies are the only way to keep them from fighting and to keep the situation under control..."
"Geronimo is one of our oldest dogs, at 11 years old. He’s fragile — he struggles to move and has been fighting a persistent eye infection.
His age and weakened immune system make him especially vulnerable. Facing winter without enough kibble could be fatal for him. I’m not sure he’ll make it..."
"Donations are very scarce, and we have no support from the local community or the government. We are crushed under debt, owing thousands of euros to the veterinary clinic, with a huge backlog on the shelter’s rent, which is high even without electricity on-site… The living conditions are very basic.
An Italian organization still supports us, but they, too, are feeling the impact of the crisis. Adoptions are few, and our appeals to other organizations have gone unanswered. Our financial situation is critical, and our morale is at an all-time low... Without this campaign — without this kibble — we won’t be able to keep going..."
"I’ve dedicated my life to animals: they’ve taught me gratitude, loyalty, unconditional love… Yet, over the years, the relentless challenges have drained my energy and motivation. In our country, animal welfare is overlooked; pets are neglected, mistreated, and abandoned without remorse.
Despite everything, we keep going, trying to focus on the positive. In 13 years, we’ve rescued over 13,000 animals... Without us, these dogs would have been left to fend for themselves in a cruel, hostile world. Our work truly is a matter of life and death for those who have no voice or means to save themselves. It’s a deep source of pride and hope, even if, on a larger scale, we know it’s only a drop in the ocean..."
