Animal Webaction visited the site 24 November 2024 and confirms the situation described below.

1. In Serbia, Svetlana is almost out of kibble to feed the 235 dogs in her shelter. They will starve if no one helps!

%%%

"We have 15 new dogs at the shelter, all rescued from dire situations. One has a broken spine, another had to have a leg amputated… These dogs need care and special food, but we’re already struggling to provide the bare minimum for the others! We’re barely surviving from week to week, sometimes even day to day...

Right now, the dogs are eating leftover chicken mixed with a little kibble. A few weeks ago, we had to reduce their portions to make the supplies last, but with winter here, they need more food to stay in good health! We simply don’t have enough... I feel completely overwhelmed. How could I not?”

2. The stock is running out, the dogs are getting anxious: they won't survive without kibble...

###

“We’ve had to cut back on kibble portions, and it’s taking a toll on the dogs. They’re nervous — barking anxiously before meals, and fights sometimes break out... We already have so many problems to handle, but kibble is the most urgent.

We can’t afford to run out, especially in winter. During this time of year, the dogs need extra food, not just to stay healthy, but to endure the cold!

We’re doing everything we can to ease tensions, separating the dogs when things heat up, but how much longer can we keep this up? Watching my dogs fight or seeing them hungry feels like being stuck between a rock and a hard place.”

3. Amputated and recovering, Flip needs kibble to heal and learn to live with his disability.

###

“I found Flip about two months ago. His nerves were severely damaged, and we took him to four different vets, hoping to save his leg. But in the end, amputation was the only option...

Flip is an absolute sweetheart, with an incredible temperament despite everything he’s been through. He’s recovering from the surgery now, but it’s not easy. He needs care and proper nutrition to heal and adapt to life on three legs!”

4. Donations are in freefall, adoptions are rare... Svetlana is in debt and distraught: she won't be able to feed her dogs without this campaign!

###

“Donations are terribly low, far below what we need to cover even our usual expenses, let alone emergencies. I use my own salary to make up the difference, but it’s not enough. Vet bills, especially for surgeries and treatments for dogs in critical condition, are enormous! I’ve had to take on debt — loans, credit, borrowing from anyone willing to help — just to keep the shelter afloat.

The biggest challenge is providing consistent care and enough kibble for the dogs every day. But there are also other unavoidable expenses, like waste removal, which requires four trucks, each costing €100… We simply can’t afford it.

The situation feels hopeless. Too many dogs in need, and almost no adoptions — just one in the past few months! We’re short on kibble, medicine, everything for the dogs already here, let alone the new arrivals... I truly hope this campaign works. Honestly, I don’t know how we’ll survive otherwise.”

5. Svetlana isn’t asking for money, just kibble to keep her dogs from starving.

###

“I never intended to have 235 dogs in the shelter. That was never the plan. My original goal was to focus on sterilization and help where I could, but once you step into this world, it’s a slippery slope. How do you turn your back on so much suffering? I simply can’t.

Without this shelter, these dogs would be on the streets, left to fend for themselves. Many wouldn’t survive — they’d be hit by cars, or worse... Even though the shelter isn’t a real home, it’s a place where these dogs find safety, comfort, and people who care for them. Seeing them find peace fills my heart!

If I’ve achieved nothing else in life, I know I’ve given them that. And for me, that’s all that matters.”

5. If this campaign succeeds, Svetlana will not receive any money, but 1600 kg of kibble, delivered from the Animal Webaction logistics centre in Serbia.

Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Serbia which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.

6. Campaigns launched on Animal Webaction often fail...

7. In Serbia, street dogs are hunted by the State and ignored by the population, volunteers like Svetlana are their only hope.
