"We have 300 dogs here at the shelter, and that number keeps fluctuating – honestly, I’ve lost track. People abandon them like trash, sometimes on the street, sometimes right at our doorstep… It’s far from easy: donations barely cover the basics, and it’s been this way for a long time.
In the past few weeks, we’ve only received a few bags of kibble and some cans of wet food. But we have hundreds of dogs to feed! Right now, the only solution is to mix a little bit of kibble with leftover bakery scraps. It’s just enough to keep them from starving, but it’s not enough. And this has been going on for two or three weeks now… We’re really starting to see the consequences.
This diet is disastrous for their health. They’re getting weaker by the day. And with winter here, they need to eat more just to get by and keep warm… Watching them grow weaker, sicker, and hungrier is unbearable for me!"
"At night, the dogs bark nonstop – it’s constant, like they can’t find peace. During the day, they start fights over the slightest thing. They’re on edge, and it’s only getting worse. It breaks my heart to see them like this – a sadness I can’t even put into words.
All I want is for my dogs to make it through, but since I had to reduce their food rations, they’ve gotten weaker. Fights are becoming more frequent, and hunger is making them irritable… It’s so hard to see them this way! Honestly, I don’t know what to do anymore – I feel stuck."
"I’m sick, stuck in bed all day. I can’t even go out to ask for donations or try to get some kibble from the pet store… Thankfully, my granddaughter is here to look after the dogs at the shelter. I don’t know what I’d do without her… But it’s hard to have to rely so much on others...
Financially, it’s the same struggle. I do what I can with my small retirement pension, splitting it between the dogs and myself. In an ideal world, it might be enough, but in reality, with hundreds of dogs to care for, it’s far from sufficient… Donations are our only lifeline, but they come in dribs and drabs. Adoptions, on the other hand, have completely stopped. The debts keep piling up – the vet bill alone is 2,500 euros.
As for kibble, it’s become a luxury I can’t afford. And around here, no one will sell on credit! So I make do with what I have: bakery scraps, because that’s all I can manage. All of this is draining. Demoralizing. I’m at my wit’s end, exhausted. The problems keep piling up, faster than I can solve them…"
"I’ve always wanted to help animals. It didn’t come from any specific event – it’s just who I am. I love them all, unconditionally. As a little girl, I dreamed of having a place where I could care for them, protect them, and give them shelter. That’s the dream I wanted to fulfill with this organization, with this shelter.
Over the years, we’ve saved hundreds of dogs. We’ve literally snatched them from death. Here, for a stray dog, life often means endless suffering on the streets or, worse, euthanasia at the pound… Every dog we’ve taken in has been given a second chance.
My dogs have taught me so much. They’ve taught me respect, patience, and love – real love. They’ve shown me the most beautiful things in life. All they deserve is to be loved, safe, and given a real chance to live better. That’s all I want for them."
