Animal Webaction visited the site 25 January 2025 and confirms the situation described below.
"The situation with stray dogs is getting more and more complicated. Many are hit by cars, abandoned by their owners, or mistreated by locals. There are only a handful of us trying to take care of them, and honestly, it's becoming unmanageable! We’re really lacking resources. Right now, for example, we only have three bags of kibble left to share between the shelter dogs and the ones on the streets…
We've already had to reduce portions. Some stray dogs are starting to leave their usual spots in search of food elsewhere… It's really worrying! This could lead to fights with other dogs or, even worse, complaints from residents. And if there are complaints, the dogs risk being captured by municipal services…
I feel exhausted and completely helpless. It's winter, and street dogs are already struggling so much… The last thing they deserve is to wander around hungry on top of everything else!"
"We keep finding more sick, injured, or abandoned dogs. Just the other day, someone dropped off four puppies right in front of the shelter’s door. We've also had several cases of dogs hit by cars, and of course, we couldn't just leave them there. We had to step in, but every rescue requires resources… and we simply don’t have them anymore!
We’re running dangerously low on kibble, and this couldn’t have happened at a worse time—winter is here, and conditions are harsher than usual. The dogs need extra food to stay warm…
Without kibble, they’ll start losing weight, making them even more vulnerable to disease. And for those who are already sick or recovering, it will be a disaster. Our shelter is supposed to help them, but without kibble, there’s nothing we can do!"
"We rescued Malena about a month ago. She had been abandoned near the coal mines and was fighting to survive. One day, she got caught in a machine, which crushed her leg. The workers, unable to help her, begged me to step in… so I did.
I rushed her to the vet, where she received the necessary treatment, and then I brought her back to the shelter. She's doing better, but she’s still fragile. She needs proper nutrition to regain her strength and face the winter. Without enough kibble, her health is at serious risk… and after everything she’s been through, that’s the last thing she deserves!"
"Right now, things are really tough, especially financially. I’m deeply in debt with the vet after treating so many dogs, and I still owe money to the pet store for the kibble I bought for the puppies.
Donations have completely dried up, and getting help feels nearly impossible. The situation in the country is dire—many people are struggling just to provide for themselves and their families. So when I ask for support for the dogs, some react badly because they can barely get by themselves…
And to make things worse, adoptions have nearly stopped. In the past few months, only a handful of dogs have found families, while new ones keep arriving at the shelter… Finding kibble for them is a real challenge! One thing is certain—we won’t make it without help."
"I’ve always loved animals, for as long as I can remember. Even as a child, I cared deeply about them and was outraged by how they were mistreated. Back then, it was even worse—stray dogs were hunted by shooters and dog catchers, injured, killed, and no one seemed to care. It was heartbreaking to see, and I knew that as soon as I could help, I would. And so I did.
But the way people look at me has always been difficult to bear. Some call me crazy for helping animals when so many children are in need. Others constantly complain—first about stray dogs in the streets, then about their presence in the shelter. They refuse to see that what we’re doing isn’t just about the dogs—it’s about the well-being of the entire community.
Despite everything, helping animals brings me true happiness. It always has. I keep fighting for their rights, pushing authorities to enforce the laws that are supposed to protect them. It’s not easy, but I know that our work makes a difference. Without us, these dogs would have almost no chance at all."
