1. In Bosnia, Slobodanka is almost out of kibble to feed the 121 dogs in her shelter. They will starve if no one helps!
"The number of dogs in our shelter keeps increasing—people know we exist, and that's exactly the problem… Puppies are abandoned, adult dogs are left at our door, all because people refuse to sterilize them, even when it's offered for free. The problem is only getting worse.
Donations, on the other hand, are decreasing. We are struggling to meet the dogs’ needs, and when it comes to kibble, we are forced to sacrifice quality for quantity. The result? Malnourished dogs losing weight, with teeth in terrible condition...
Our situation is extremely precarious, and as I speak to you, our last bags of kibble are almost empty. We can barely last two days… How do you tell a dog, 'Wait a month, and we’ll feed you’?
They are not objects you can set aside until things get better. They need to eat every single day!"
2. The dogs are getting more and more anxious: Slobodanka knows things will turn into a nightmare without kibble!
"The consequences of the kibble shortage are already showing. The dogs are losing weight rapidly, especially hunting breeds, which thin out at an alarming rate. Their bodies are weakening, making them more vulnerable to illness. Time is running out...
Hunger doesn’t just harm their health—it also changes their behavior. Aggression is starting to surface at the shelter, and we are deeply worried. Imagine being in an enclosure with five or six starving dogs, knowing you don’t have enough kibble for all of them. One day, two days, three days… The risk increases, not just for the dogs, but for us as well!
Hunger changes a dog. They don’t attack right away, not necessarily. But their survival instinct always ends up taking over. And if we don’t find a way to feed them soon, we know very well how this will end..."
3. After a tragic accident and months of struggle, Ares needs kibble to regain his strength.
"Ares is 8 years old, and his story is heartbreaking: after being hit by a car and losing the use of his hind legs, his owner wanted to euthanize him... We took him under our care, and he spent two months in a veterinary clinic fighting to recover.
Today, he is safe in our shelter, but he’s not out of the woods yet. After months of immobility, he needs food—both in quantity and quality—to rebuild his muscle mass. A proper diet is crucial for his recovery. Ares deserves a second chance!"
4. Suffocated by debt and declining donations, the shelter is fighting for survival: only this campaign can prevent the worst.
"Our financial situation is dire. Donations barely cover 20 to 30% of our needs, and the rest is a daily struggle. We are drowning in veterinary bills, and just the shelter’s rent alone is €1,000 per month. Every time something good happens, two or three bad things follow. It feels like we are constantly fighting just to stay afloat.
Adoptions are slow, and there is no help from the city or the state. We reach out to institutions, businesses—anyone who could assist us—but nothing changes. So, we do what we’ve always done: we beg, we plead, we make do however we can...
When we have enough kibble—and especially good kibble—the difference is enormous. The dogs are healthier, calmer, happier. And so are we. It takes away one huge worry, allows us to breathe a little. Right now, we are fighting for the shelter’s survival itself. This campaign might be our only chance."
5. Slobodanka isn’t asking for money, just kibble to keep the dogs from starving.
"I have always loved animals, but everything changed 13 or 14 years ago. It all started with one mother dog and her nine puppies at the Prijedor pound. I went to help and ended up leaving with twenty dogs. That was the moment—when helping just one became helping as many as possible. And I never stopped.
Sabina and I do this out of love, without expecting anything in return. Maybe you’re born with this kind of empathy, or maybe life chooses you for it. Either way, when you care about living beings, you fight to give them everything they need. And when you can’t, it eats away at you.
You lose sleep over it. Some of us have even developed health issues from the stress. We think, 'Maybe we should take a break,' but we never do. The dogs come first—before us, before everything. That says it all. But we keep going. For them. Because they’ve taught us the one thing that truly matters: kindness. And if they, after everything they’ve been through, can still be so noble, so good—then so can we."
