Animal Webaction visited the site 15 February 2025 and confirms the situation described below.
"We take care of around 140 stray dogs in Marrakech, but their number is constantly changing, just like our resources. Right now, we barely have enough kibble left to last 3-4 days between the shelter and the streets. For the past two weeks, we've been rationing, making fewer rounds… The dogs aren’t eating enough, so they move around more, take risks—accidents, culls, diseases from trash...
We're struggling to find the dogs we used to feed, and we keep discovering new ones… Tracking them is getting harder. Before, we had time to bond with them, to socialize them. But with the kibble shortage, everything is deteriorating. The dogs are becoming wary, some even aggressive. We're losing their trust...
With warmer days ahead, we know things will get even worse—puppies will be born in large numbers, and expenses will soar: sterilizations, vaccines, kibble... We can't afford another failure. The last failed campaign crushed us! We still haven’t recovered. Everything collapses without kibble..."
"We’re also rationing portions for the dogs at the shelter because we’re almost out of kibble. That’s our biggest struggle. They’re hungry, and sometimes they fight, which creates a lot of problems... We have to separate them, leave some outside the enclosures, constantly reorganize the space. It’s extremely complicated, but most of all, dangerous—for them and for us.
It’s frustrating… I just wish it were easier, at least when it comes to feeding them! That’s the most basic thing. And yet, we’re always short on kibble, always begging for more—it’s a never-ending fight. The more we run out, the worse their health and behavior become: weakness, lower immunity, fights, injuries... Everything is connected.
The kibble shortage affects everything! The less they eat, the weaker they get, and the more critical the situation becomes..."
"Larbi is a dog of about three years old. He has been at the shelter for two weeks. Unfortunately, he has a tumor. He has already undergone several chemotherapy sessions and just had surgery to remove part of it.
He’s not doing well… His body is weakened by the illness and treatments. He needs all his strength to recover. And for that, he must eat enough—especially after surgery! Every meal is essential for his recovery, to help him regain weight and rebuild his strength.
But with the kibble shortage, we can’t provide him with the nutrition he needs. And that lowers his chances of getting better..."
"Donations have dropped significantly recently, probably because of the holidays, the new year, and inflation, which is hitting both Europe and Morocco. Right now, we receive around €400 to €500 a month, which helps a little, but it’s nowhere near enough to cover all the shelter’s expenses. We’re in a critical situation.
To keep things going, I’m personally going into debt. The banks won’t lend me anything anymore—my debt ratio has skyrocketed. So, I’m borrowing from family, from friends… That’s where I’m at. This is really a cry for help because I can’t keep going like this forever.
We’re lacking everything: medication, anesthetics, medical supplies for treatment and sterilizations... We’ve even had to cut back on rescues. Adoptions are rare, the shelter is full, and some dogs ready to go abroad are stuck because their adopters have stopped responding... It’s heartbreaking. We have so many problems to deal with, but our priority is simply to feed our animals and keep helping them! And for that, we desperately need kibble—above everything else..."
"Our work is essential because, without us, these animals would have nowhere to receive care, food, or a safe place to recover. That’s what makes our mission so important—giving them a chance they wouldn’t have had on the streets. Without a shelter, without medical attention, many wouldn’t survive.
But our role goes beyond that. We also work to raise awareness, to help people understand that these animals are sentient beings. They feel pain, emotions, they have a nervous system, a brain. This fight for recognition of their sensitivity is one of the biggest challenges. Until awareness grows, abuse and abandonment will continue...
We also want to show the broader impact of our work—why protecting these animals benefits society as a whole. Moving toward greater respect for all species—whether it’s a donkey, a horse, a dog, or a cat, purebred or not—matters. The road is long, and there’s still so much to do. But every animal saved is a victory. It’s one more life protected, one less suffering. And it’s deeply rewarding, because these animals ask for so little, yet they give us so much in return!"
