Animal Webaction visited the site 09 March 2025 and confirms the situation described below.
"These days, we’re dealing with so many emergencies… The dogs just keep coming. One arrived with a badly injured leg, another was hit by a car, then a mother with her puppies... Giving them the care they need is already a huge challenge. But the worst part is that in just a few days, we won’t be able to feed them anymore…
We only have ten bags of kibble left — enough for maybe three or four days at most. We’re already rationing every portion, trying to stretch what we have as far as it will go. But it’s getting harder and harder to keep up. Donations have dropped, prices keep rising...
Honestly, I’m really worried. If this campaign fails, our dogs will go hungry. They’ll suffer. They won’t be healthy, and they definitely won’t be happy. And my goal — it’s exactly the opposite..."
"Running out of kibble creates a whole range of problems: digestive issues, diarrhea, malnutrition, diseases… and that’s just the physical side. Behaviorally, it’s just as bad. The dogs get stressed, on edge, and sometimes they fight over the little food there is... Their survival instinct kicks in.
Right now, I can’t properly feed the dogs at the shelter. If this situation continues, their health will go downhill, and the stress — for them and for me — will only get worse. It’s exhausting to live with this constant fear, not knowing if there will be enough to feed them tomorrow... It’s starting to take a toll on my own health, especially as I get older.
Most — if not nearly all — of the dogs in our care were abandoned, abused, or forgotten. Here, they should be able to breathe, to feel safe again. They shouldn’t have to worry about going hungry or fighting over a meal."
"We found Dona on the street a few weeks ago. Catching her was no easy task — she’s absolutely terrified of people! I can’t be sure, but I suspect she was badly beaten and neglected...
No one can get near her. I’m one of the only people she allows close, and even with me, she’s still scared stiff. Trauma like that leaves deep marks.
She’s also extremely underweight. She’s going to need time, care, and gentle support to start healing — both physically and emotionally. Kibble is essential for her to regain strength and begin that journey to recovery."
"Donations have dropped off significantly. We got a bit of support around Christmas, but since then, it’s been really quiet. At the same time, we’ve taken in several sick dogs, so a big part of our funds went toward vet care. We’re still carrying debt from those treatments...
And now summer is coming. We’ll need to do routine check-ups for all the dogs: flea and tick treatments, updating any missing vaccines. It’s all essential, but we have no idea how we’re going to afford it...
It’s tough. Serbia isn’t a wealthy country, and while a few people do try to help, it’s just not enough. Most people simply don’t have much to give. We receive a small annual grant from the local government, but it doesn’t even cover one month’s expenses. Everyone’s struggling to get by — and sadly, we’re no exception. This campaign is our only lifeline right now."
"You never really get used to seeing animals suffer — I know I haven’t. Even after all these years, after everything I’ve witnessed, it still breaks my heart every time. The only way I cope is by focusing on the small things — holding on to the idea that every animal we help is a life changed. We can’t save them all, but for the ones we do reach, the impact is real and lasting.
That said, it’s not easy. Running a shelter is a full-time commitment, with no days off. When someone calls about an abandoned dog, you have to act immediately. It’s a huge responsibility and constant pressure. I don’t think people realize just how demanding and exhausting it really is.
But I love dogs, and I believe every single one of them deserves to be safe and loved. That’s why I give everything I can to protect them — and to make sure that if they’re lucky enough to leave the shelter one day, they go to the right home."
