On February 17th, the dog food stock of Sandra’s shelter in Serbia will be completely depleted: what will her 74 dogs eat then?
Due to the lack of kibbles, Sandra already had to stop taking care of some stray dogs…
Her shelter is overcrowded, but there isn’t any adoption at the moment and online calls for donations do not work.
Facing overwhelmed associations that can no longer help her, Sandra stands alone to take care of the dogs and she can’t work…
With the onset of winter, Sandra has more and more to do and dogs need more food to withstand the cold...
Saddled in vet debts, she can no longer cope with the situation…
We want to send her 3 200 kg of dog food in emergency to allow dogs to face the coming weeks.
In Serbia, Sandra gathers in her private shelter 74 sick, injured or endangered dogs that she takes out from the streets. But lately, difficulties have dramatically increased…
In 2019, the dog food shop allowed Sandra to buy on credit up to a 200 € per month limit, instead of 800 €/month in 2018: in a few days only, Sandra won’t have a penny left on her allowed credit.
"Saturday February the 9th, I went to the upper limit of my month credit. This last order should help me to feed the dogs until February the 17th. After that, I don’t know yet what I will find for feeding the dogs..." Sandra says with concern.
Sandra judges she can’t financially handle more than a half of the dogs currently living in her shelter.
Number of adoptions dramatically fell, so the number of dogs in the shelter continuously increases. "But I decently can’t leave a paralyzed, injured or endangered dog on its fate outside in the street; it’s more than I can endure!"
Sandra manages to get some of the dogs she saved, treated and spayed adopted, particularly thanks to French association Un Coeur pour eux.
Unfortunately, this association cannot give any financial help to Sandra’s shelter. That’s precisely why they alerted us on the difficulties encountered by Sandra.
In Serbia, Sandra has knocked on every door : only Beta Zajecar association responded to her call.
As often as possible, this association provides kibbles for stray dogs Sandra feeds before being able to catch and sterilize them, but Beta Zajecar is facing her own difficulties at the moment : that’s why she asked us to set a specific collection for Sandra’s shelter...
Twice a month, Sandra launches calls for donations on Internet in order to pay her debts, but it doesn’t work: only 25 euros have been collected since 10 days the collection has been online..
"People know I'm not playing games with my dogs’ lives: all of them are spayed and neutered as soon as possible, and I struggle to save them no matter what. So they think there is no emergency anymore and they don’t give anything... Yet I’m indeed caught in the throat with these food expenses..." Sandra explains.
She feels trapped and discouraged.
A band of about forty dogs lives along a road near the Danube where inhabitants come and leave their garbage…
"Those dogs were trapped in surrounding villages and dumped in this no man's land, far away from the first houses. That way nobody ever sees them, and everyone can forget about them", Sandra says in bitterness.
But man’s cruelty towards them made them turn totally wild : whenever she’s got enough food, Sandra goes to see them and tries to get their confidence in order to sterilize them one after the other. That’s how Sandra managed to save Sarah and her babies, or Sharenko, for instance.
But for several weeks, Sandra has had to stop this action due to the lack of dog food. These stray dogs stay on their own, without anybody to care about their proliferation...
We are able to take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay our transporter before February 18th.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected food will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
Because of her difficulties in finding enough money, Sandra has contracted large debts from the various veterinary offices in her sector.
"It has come to the point where I can’t have any dog operated, even for an emergency", Sandra says.
For each new operation, just as for the payment of what she owes to the vets, she can only rely on collection websites and on the generosity of individual donors, that often don’t respond...
Sandra’s shelter on February 7th, 2019 : cold and snow are there... While the dogs seem to be happy of this, for Sandra, winter causes much more work to do...
Sandra lives in large lowlands, where nothing stands in the way of the frozen wind. For this reason, during the winter, she must be even more careful about dogs health, particularly regarding the most fragiles among them.
Furthermore, Sandra has to clear the snow from the court, regularly check water bowls, that get frozen during the day...
And of course, the dogs spend more energy for maintaining their body temperature, so they need more food.
And the vicious circle of debts continues: new legislation now requires cars to be in perfect condition in order to drive in Serbia, up to the body structure!
This is not the case with Sandra’s vehicle, which has some traces of corrosion among other things: therefore, Sandra must either incur the risk of paying a fine if controlled driving on her way to her pet food shop, either pay a taxi to pick up injured dogs or take them to the vet farther and farther from her home.
Her situation is becoming increasingly precarious...
The first time Sandra had to face the terrible situation of stray dogs was in 1988: as she went in a shelter to adopt her first dog, she was shocked by the awful living conditions the dogs had there.
Her hardly 2 months puppy had just spent 3 weeks closed in the basement nearly without food and water! This puppy is the one who triggered a vocation in Sandra that has only grown in the last 30 years.
After working for a newspaper company, she found another job to be more available for her animals. But she couldn’t count on anyone to take care of them properly in her absence, and after several of her cats and dogs died for this reason, she finally came to spend all of her time with animals.
She has invested all of her savings, her energy, her health, and her personal life in this cause, but everything relies on her…
She is continually living with the stress of knowing how to feed and treat her dogs, and she is exhausted. "I feel like I'm in a vicious circle...", she admits desperately.
We cannot let her down while she needs us so much !
If the collection succeeds, the 3000kg collected will be given to the 74 dogs gathered in Sandra’s shelter.
