At Daniela's shelter in Romania, the stock of dog food is totally gone: it is an empty warehouse that we photographed during our visit on Friday 15/02...
Daniela used all her remaining money to buy 60 bags in a hurry: enough to last until February 19.
It's been a very harsh winter, with multiple rescues: Daniela now has 470 mouths to feed!
1. We went to the shelter last friday: there was no dog food left!
During our visit on 15/02, there was no more dog food left... Daniela used all the money left over from the association to buy 600kg of kibbles in an emergency, but it will only last 4 days for the 470 dogs in the shelter.
Daniel, a member of the Animal Webaction team, visited Daniela's shelter on Friday, February 15, and made a sad observation: Daniela no longer had any food to feed her 470 dogs, the reserve was empty!
In November 2018, the Animal Webaction community swung into action to help Daniela's shelter: 4200 kg of kibble had been sent urgently.
For several weeks after the stock was exhausted, Daniela managed to find ways to feed the dogs, but she is back into the corner! With less than 200€ remaining on the association's account, she ordered 60 bags of croquettes in a hurry, thus playing her last card... the bags will last for 4 days only.
2. Many dogs have been rescued over the winter : they are in no condition to face hunger!
Lyon has been gathered by Daniela in a state of absolute thinness.... Completely prostrated for many days after his rescue, he progresses slowly and gradually regains weight
Iubitu's wounds were so deep when Daniela discovered him that his hind legs could not be saved. He's still recovering from his double amputation
Found wandering at the beginning of the year, Eros suffered from many wounds related to a very advanced skin disease. His treatment is still very recent and still ongoing
Fetita was found with a significant wound on her paw, caused by a wire wrapped around her... The flesh has been deeply cut, her medical follow-up is still ongoing
Piti was found in a ditch, with both eyes very damaged... one of them could not be saved, the other is still present but useless. At the age of 10, Piti is blind and still confused
Bebe was picked up by Daniela on the roadside very recently, in February. He's currently on antibiotics, and too weak to move around.
Bety was suffering from a skin disease affecting her entire body when she was found, as well as a neck wound
Despite the difficulties, Daniela cannot turn a blind eye to the suffering animals that wander the surrounding cities of the shelter.
The bitter cold of winter has brought its share of animals in distress, several dozen have been rescued in recent months, bringing the number of dogs at the shelter to nearly 500, many of them in poor health....
3. In only a few weeks, more than 30 puppies have been gathered: Daniela is drowing in the expenses and extra work
With litters of sometimes more than 10 puppies, a handful of pregnant street bitches are all it takes to bring dozens of new puppies to care for...
Having tried to take shelter in the middle of a dump, Naoia was accompanied by her eight puppies... the whole family was brought by Daniela to the shelter
Reported to Daniela as abandoned in the middle of the city, these two puppies were immediately gathered to the shelter in January...
All of the rescued puppies require not only more expensive feed, but also vaccines, extra care, sometimes specific treatment, and systematic sterilization after a few months...
Also found in the middle of a dumpster, all the puppies of this litter were taken to the shelter
In Romania, dog owners rarely get their dogs strerilized. This leads to repeated abandonment of unwanted litters, but also to constant reproduction of street dogs.
The rescue of only two mothers and their babies brought about twenty puppies to Daniela in January, to which were added several cases of 2 to 5 puppies here and there...
In the middle of winter, Daniela couldn't have imagined worse: the financial burden and time required by these puppies are far too important....
4. If this collection fails, the dogs will not receive any food

We are able to take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay our transporter before February 22nd.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected food will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
5. At the shelter from 7am to 11pm, every day and on a voluntary basis: Daniela cannot work to buy food
Caring for hundreds of dogs takes a lot of time: every day checking that they are all fine, feeding them, cleaning the stalls, making rescues, visiting the vet, finding funding and adopters...
Daniela tries to warm up after a day spent at the shelter....
Every day brings its share of surprises, most often bad ones: the generator, essential to the shelter, stopped working during the hardest part of the winter....
Since the association's creation in 2016, Daniela has devoted all her time to the shelter. With the exception of the guard, no employee is on site, so Daniela is alone to take care of all the animals: it is impossible for her to work.
All her savings having already been used, Daniela only has the money sent by her husband, who works in Germany, to support herself, her mother and the dogs.
6. Online fundraisings have been attempted, but it never works
The last fundraising launched for the shelter: only two donations have been collected so far....
Supported by some of her followers who know her shelter, Daniela has already tried to make online fundraisings, without much success most of the time.
She also sends regular SOS on social networks, but they bring very few donations: the problem seems insoluble to her.
7. Without any regular help from other associations, Daniela feels desperate
With the help of a few friends, Daniela has been desperately trying for months to set up partnerships with other associations, in order to be able to cope with the expenses generated by the shelter, and to maximize adoptions.
Unfortunately, no result has yet been seen: only occasional help from the Brigitte Bardot Foundation and the Romanian association Kora Kariola have enabled her to get her head out of the water.
8. Daniela never stops, but puts her health at risk to save her shelter
Daniela is always on the move when it comes to helping animals in distress. It took several hours in the cold and mud to save these little puppies....
Some rescues can be dangerous: in January, Daniela was bitten by the mother of one of the litters she was trying to help. This did not discourage her, mother and puppies were eventually caught and brought back to the shelter
With her boundless energy, Daniela manages to take care of the 470 dogs all alone, and carries out all the necessary rescues herself, with or without help. This sometimes leads her to take risks, for the capture of terrified animals or in inaccessible places.
Overwhelmed, Daniela also sleeps very little, and must always be on all fronts, including the search for food, which is very stressful for her:
"I make sure that everyone is fine, that the bellies are full, and only then can I calm down, wash, and go to bed. Knowing that I have succeeded for today, but what will happen tomorrow? We need help."
9. By helping Daniela, it's them and many others we're saving
Abandoned by its owner, Albitu found himself outside overnight, and was lucky enough to cross Daniela's path... Used to having a home, he wouldn't have survived long on the street
Found wandering in the streets of Calafat at the end of December, Luta had reached the end of her gestation period: 6 puppies were born, but one of them did not survive
Toby (formerly known as Botic) has been at the shelter since last summer. His snout was totally infected when Daniela took him, and his chances of survival uncertain. He is now fully healed, even if he will remain mutilated for life
Rescued at the beginning of November after a wild abandonment, Lord was in a terrible state: extremely thin, he also suffered from an advanced skin disease linked to malnutrition
Saved from the euthanasia he had been sentenced to at the municipal shelter, Tony has been at Daniela's for barely a year
Now at the shelter with her cubs, Naoia depends on Daniela to survive...
10. To save the Romanian dogs, Daniela left eveything: her work, her comfort and her husband
Daniela at home, where she welcomes no less than 150 dogs....
Daniela now lives in her mother's house with her mum, while her husband lives and works in Germany. It is unthinkable for Daniela to join him, because it would mean abandoning the animals in their distress in Romania:
"Animals represent my whole life. Humans can manage on their own, but these animals need me to survive."
Former cleaning lady, having spent 15 years in Italy with a comfortable lifestyle, she now devotes her days to the shelter, from 7am to 11pm at the very least. She regrets that her involvement implies a certain marginalization on the part of people who do not understand her way of life, including many of her friends.
Despite these difficulties, Daniela does not regret her decisions: "If I had to do it again, I would do it again without hesitation"
11. What will the 3600 kg of dry food be used for ?
If the collection succeeds, the 3600kg collected will be given to the 470 dogs gathered in Daniela’s shelter.
