We have just returned from Antonia's shelter in Romania: 170 dogs are left without kibble!
Early March, Antonia gathered 24 new dogs at her shelter, following the death of a volunteer who was very active in animal protection in Romania.
Without her, all of them were at risk of being euthanized.
Although this decision was a very brave one, it only made Antonia's problems worse : she completly ran out of dog food!
To make the food last longer, dogs have already been under rations for a whole month! They must east stale bread, and suffer from diarrhea and allergies.
No one answers Antonia's calls for help, the town hall doesn't want to do anything: she is on her own to care for her 170 dogs...
We are Antonia and her dogs' last hope!
We want to deliver 6000 kg as soon as possible, but we must pay the transporter before 31/03/19
If the collection fails, the dogs won't receive any food.
Some of the dogs recovered by Antonia on the day of their transfer, March 2, 2019...
On February 14, an elderly woman died in Romania from cancer. She cared for about 80 dogs, and was well known on social networks in the animal welfare community.
Following her death, it was necessary to find people to take care of her animals. Unfortunately, only a few associations have mobilized to relocate them: Antonia had to recover a total of 24 dogs on March 2, much more than she had initially thought!
She now has 170 dogs to support: the equivalent of nearly 2,5 tons of croquettes per month!
Last October, the Animal Webaction community came into action to offer 6000 kg of kibbles to the shelter, but they were all consumed...
Since the end of January, Antonia has been trying to manage on her own, but the unexpected arrival of 24 new dogs has added a huge burden, both in time and money. Antonia can no longer get out of it and called us for help.
Andrei, whom we sent on the spot last week, confirmed it to us: Antonia's situation is very delicate!
For nearly a month and a half, the dogs have only held out thanks to occasional donations and stale bread donated by the canteens of neighbouring schools. Andrei could see that the only food stock on site was this bag of dry bread....
For lack of money, Antonia has to buy poorer quality kibble that she distributes in dropper form and day by day....
Many dogs show signs of weakness, and become thinner and thinner. Many suffer from diarrhea due to poor diet, and 3 have even developed allergies because of inadequate food: they need our help!
A few weeks ago, already facing the difficulty of feeding her dogs, Antonia sought the help of the Belgian association Hope pour Eux, which regularly supports her. She was able to have 100 kg of kibble delivered to her exceptionally, but this stock was used in a single day.
Unfortunately, this friendly association is already struggling to finance its own actions and is mainly dedicated to finding families for the animals saved by Antonia. This support was exceptional and unfortunately cannot be renewed.
We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before 31/03/2019.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected food will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
In 2017, Antonia accepted an offer from the municipality: they would lend her a land properly equiped to care for dogs, if her shelter also acted as the city's official pound.
Since then, Antonia has never had so many dogs at the shelter and cannot refuse them. She confirmed it to us again during our visit last friday, the mayor does not care about her financial difficulties: he categorically refuses to participate in the food purchase.
A small Belgian association helps her, but she can't afford to pay for food. In recent months, Antonia has tried to set up new partnerships with other associations or local businesses, but no one has replied... She's more isolated than ever.
With 170 dogs, she needs nearly 2.5 tons of kibble every month: at the moment, there is no solution to buy this quantity.
Terraluz and Fripouille : two dogs rescued from the "abyss of shame" in July 2018. The owner of Terraluz had made sure to lock her in a bag beforehand, to guarantee she wouldn't come out...
Antonia goes weekly to a garbage pit called "the abyss of shame": used as a dump, this pit is also regularly used for the abandonment of domestic animals.
"The huge vertical concrete walls don't give them a chance, especially since the animals sometimes injure themselves in their fall... I go there with a ladder and go down amidst the filth and, sometimes, rotting bodies..."
Without kibble, Antonia will have to give up her visits to the pit, as well as the other rescues she's been making until now...
"I was constantly on the road, and I saw every day the extent of the stray dogs problem in our country. One day, it was no longer possible for me to cope with these hungry animals and dead bodies littering the roads in complete indifference. »
Today, she devotes all her time to the association and shelter she created, as well as to her 7-year-old daughter, whom she has been raising alone since her divorce.
Antonia is exhausted by her commitment to the shelter, both physically and mentally "Often I don't go to bed until midnight or one o'clock in the morning, and I go to the shelter around 4 or 5 o'clock to clean the cages or take care of sick dogs," she explains.
"If you look at my Facebook page, you may feel that everything is going well... No one can imagine how tired I am because of the sleepless nights of watching a suffering animal or wondering how I will feed the dogs the next day, or how I will be able to vaccinate them..."
"The few savings I had when I left my previous job were all invested in the shelter, and then I divorced, finding myself alone to support my daughter."
A few years ago, there were referendums about stray dogs, after a child was got bitten.
Since then, dogcatchers have done their best to catch dogs and take them to the pound." We have seen dogs of private individuals, even on a leash, caught by dogcatchers. They even went into private courtyards. After that, you have to pay to get them back, prove that you are the masters. »
And those who are really wandering are even worse off " We found dogs hanging, drowned. Others with the snout cut off. They sell them as wolf muzzles in exchange for cartridges. »
The 6000 kg collected will be used to feed the 170 dogs gathered at Antonia's shelter.
