In Serbia, Zvezdana's shelter no longer has any kibble for its 40 dogs, she begs us to help her!
Helpless with an empty food storage, Zvezdana called us for help a few days ago.
We went to her shelter on Sunday, March 24.
During our visit, we saw how difficult the situation is: the shelter lacks everything!
Living on a meagre retirement pension, Zvezdana can no longer afford to buy kibble.
Deeply affected, she fears that she will no longer be able to protect them.
We wanted to help them by sending him 1 500 kg of kibble as soon as possible.
Our reporter Suzana went to the shelter on March 24th, following a call for help from Zvezdana, the president of the association "We urgently need food, we have no more food" she told us then
On the spot, Suzana noticed that there was a tiny amount of kibble left, which Zvezdana was trying to distribute among all the dogs hosted at the shelter.... The only comfort then was the bones donated by a local butcher, which allowed the dogs to forget their hunger....
For 18 years, Zvezdana has been working through her association for abandoned animals in Serbia, but with extremely limited resources:
"To us, each animal has right to live. In our shelter we have disabled and old animals who need special care and special food we aren't always able to provide"
Today, Zvezdana affords all the necessary medical treatments herself (the shelter has 30% elderly dogs, but also sick and disabled ones), and also pays 80% of the food costs. A financial abyss, which she can no longer fill...
Zvezdana is now retired, and receives only a meagre pension. Because she cannot afford a car, she travels exclusively by bike: her round trips between the various places where the dogs are hosted represent tens of kilometres a day...
Because she is already saving money by all possible means to keep her head above water, Zvezdana does not see how to solve her current difficulties: she can no longer afford to buy kibble! The only solution is to go deeper into debt, which would then jeopardize the association itself, and the protection of dogs...
We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets for 1 500 kg, but we have to pay it before 01/04/2019.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected food will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
Every month, Zvezdana receives about 100 kilos of kibble (the equivalent of a week's worth of food) thanks to a Danish association, which shows unfailing support. However, this association is the only one to provide regular assistance to the shelter, which is largely insufficient in relation to the needs of the 40 dogs hosted:
"Zvezdana is the most amazing person I have met. I have an animal protection in Denmark and we give her 100 kg feed every month. I know her heart beats for the dogs, and she gives the dogs before she even gets her food herself" said Tina, President of the association when we contacted her.
It is estimated that Serbia has about 100,000 stray dogs. Private companies were commissioned in 2012 to catch these dogs: their dogcatchers (the name given to the employees responsible for the capture) have been operating throughout the country since then.
Receiving financial incentives for each dog caught, dogcatchers hunt dogs relentlessly, and use extremely violent techniques. Many dogs are killed, the others end up crammed into filthy pounds, wand left to die ithout care nor food.
Volunteers believe that their actions, in addition to being cruel, do not have a beneficial impact on the volume of stray dogs in the country. Worse still, they greatly undermine the beneficial actions that have existed until now: the subsidies allocated since 2007 as part of a vast national sterilization program have been drastically cut, despite encouraging results when they were carried out....
Involved in animal protection for years, Zvezdana suffers a lot from the current situation, and seemed very affected during our visit.
Saddened, and extremely stressed, she must worry every day about the meal she will be able to offer, or not, to the dogs she rescued....
"It's very hard for her. She sacrificed her own life for the dogs. Those who are in difficult situation and scared, sleep with her in her house, some of them in her bed. 24 hours doggys have her attention. She does not go on vacation. She rests when her doggys rest. The dogs are Zvezdana's life.", Suzana told us on the way home.
If the collection succeeds, the XXX kg collected will be used to feed the 40 dogs gathered by Zvezdana for several weeks.
