Animal Webaction visited the site 05 April 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

We just came back from Maricruz's shelter in Spain: her 60 dogs are out of kibble!

Called out by an urgent SOS sent by Maricruz, we went to the shelter on April 5th.

On the spot, we only found one bag of dog food: Maricruz and the dogs have to live one day at a time...

Most of the dogs are very thin, they won't be able to cope for long without kibble.

Calls for help, online pools and appeals at the supermarket: Maricruz does everything she can, but her actions bear little fruit....

For them, we want to send 2880 kg of kibble as soon as possible.

100% transparency guaranteed

1. Following an SOS from Maricruz, we went to the shelter on April 5th: there was no more food left!

On April 2nd, Maricruz sent an SOS to her entire Facebook network to get dog food as soon as possible. Unfortunately, without success.

###
During our visit, 2 days after the SOS sent by Maricruz, only one 15kg bag of dog food remained at the shelter...

Our caseworker Abigail went to the shelter, guided by Maricruz: she met the 60 dogs living there...

We approached Maricruz in early April, after being called out by one of her calls for help. We asked Abigail to go there as soon as possible to visit the shelter, and evaluate the situation.

On the spot, she noticed that only one bag of kibble remained in the food reserve: not even enough for 1 day for 60 dogs...

Overwhelmed, Maricruz buys a bag whenever she can, but she and the 60 dogs in the shelter are forced to live day to day!

2. The dogs welcomed at the shelter have no reserves to draw on: skinny for some, thin for the most part, they can't stay without food!

###
Poisoned by a processionary caterpillar, Diana had only skin on her bones when she was rescuedby Maricruz. Thanks to a sufficient supply of food, as well as several treatments and vitamins, she has regained some strength but is still very thin

###
At the shelter, Maricruz welcomes about ten puppies. She manages to gather a few bags of pasta and rice from a supermarket, which she mixes with a little dog food: a too poor diet for them

###
Most of the dogs housed in the shelter are now in good health, but they do not have any extra weight, far from it: they need a regular supply of food to avoid weakening

###
Due to lack of resources, the shelter does not have a concrete slab: the ground becomes muddy and slippery in case of rains, puddles are formed and the dogs cannot dry, which requires more energy from them. Which is exactly how we found them during our visit

During our visit, we observed the different dogs hosted at the shelter, and also photographed them. Thanks to Maricruz's resourcefulness, most of the dogs are healthy, but none of them have excess weight.

From thin to skinny depending on the case, dogs do not have a reserve from which they can draw if food becomes too scarce...

3. If the collection fails, dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before April 11th.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

4. To devote herself to the shelter, Maricruz has left her job: she earns only a small income, it is not enough for her to buy food for 60 dogs

###
The land on which Maricruz set up the shelter has several olive trees: they are the ones who allow her to get some money from the government and a local cooperative

Because she can't hire anyone at all, Maricruz takes care of the shelter alone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With 60 dogs to support, it is now impossible for her to combine this commitment with a professional activity: Maricruz had to stop working.

Today, the few olive trees on her land allow her to earn a little money, which she invests in the shelter. But between the medical costs, the construction far from being completed, and the food costs that are constantly being renewed, this money is insufficient to cover the expenses!

5. Maricruz regularly makes online calls for help, but is only helped by a handful of people

In addition to the calls for donations she makes, Maricruz regularly invites her network to join the teaming group created for her association

Unfortunately, only 20 people have so far joined the group on teaming, the equivalent of less than 50€ per month. An insufficient amount!

When facing significant medical expenses, Maricruz also launches dedicated fundraising campaigns, with very few results...

Maricruz tries as best she can to get help for her shelter, both using her relatives and social networks.

Calls for help on Facebook, online pools and teaming groups are solutions she has already tried, and continues to this day, but with each try, only a handful of individuals appear at best. All these actions are very time-consuming, and all the more complex for Maricruz because she doesn't have any internet access at the shelter!

She also carries out physical collections in a nearby supermarket, but these often only bring her bags of pasta and rice, which cannot feed the dogs alone....

6. We want to help them as fast as we can

###
Lily, 8,  was found in a field, very thin and wandering in the rain...

###
Popeye was along several other puppies when he was found, wandering in the middle of a busy road, having fun running after cars... To protect him, Maricruz took him to the shelter

###
Blanqui was gathered at the same time as Popeye, to protect him from the traffic in which he wandered...

###
Piraña only joined the shelter three months ago: her meeting with Maricruz was a coincidence, Piraña having been thrown into a bag in the middle of a dumpster....

###
Pichi was found with 7 other puppies in a trash can only a few months ago... and is still only a puppy

###
Because she wasn't good at hunting, Sara was left abandoned overnight...

###
At 14, Bobby is the oldest dog in the shelter. Rescued after being hit by a car, he still suffers from after-effects on his hind legs

7. In Spain, the dog is not man's best friend

This article that came out in February 2019, reported a 20% increase in animal abuse in Spain in 2018...

A recent report from the Spanish Nature Protection Service (Seprona) stated 10,920 offences related to injuries to domestic animals in 2018 alone.... An alarming figure which, however, is far from representing all animal abuse in the country, which most of the time goes unpunished.

Commonly used for hunting, dogs are at the centre of these abuses: beaten and barely fed, hunting dogs are thrown into the street at the slightest sign of weakness. Exhausted and abused, dogs are often too weak to survive alone in the wild.

Across Spain, several shelters exist and are struggling to offer a second chance to these dogs rejected by others...

8. Maricruz gave up everything for the fate of her dogs

###
Maricruz and Diana

Maricruz was not initially meant to set up a shelter: involved in animal protection for years, she was satisfied for a long time to collect abandoned dogs in her own house, while continuing to work.

But a few years ago, conflicts with the neighbourhood precipitated her decision to set up a shelter. Because they were disturbed by the barking, neighbours filed a complaint and caused great harm to Maricruz and her husband.

Since then, she has been fighting to give dozens of dogs a second chance...

9. What will the 2880 kg of kibble be used for ?

If the collection succeeds, the 2880 kg of kibble will be used to feed the 60 dogs at the Maricruz shelter.
