Animal Webaction visited the site 03 June 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

From June 12th, this Romanian shelter will be out of food for its 171 dogs!

Informed of the difficulties encountered by the shelter, we went on the spot on June 3rd.

The shelter is full, and the food stock is running low : there will be no kibble left on June 12th.

Volunteers do not manage to collect any; the British association that supports the shelter has already done its maximum.

The shelter is the only hope for Baia Mare's abandoned dogs, hundreds of them owe their lives to its existence only.

We must intervene to help them, and want to send them 3000 kg of kibble as soon as possible.

If the target is not reached, we will not be able to pay the carrier, the truck's departure will be cancelled.

100% transparency guaranteed.

1.The kibble stock is getting lower and lower, there will be none left as of June 12th

###
Bear was found wandering only a few days ago, with a very serious neck injury. Chained with a rope held very tight, which sank into his flesh by several centimetres, he had to undergo emergency surgery. Kibbles are essential for him in these difficult times

###
Beaten on the head with an axe and abandoned with his muzzle and legs tied up, Jax was very lucky to be found at the right time.... He had only been at the shelter for a few days when we came by, and still had several scars.

###
Frida was locked up in the municipal pound until volunteers helped her in mid-May. She had a large abdominal tumour from which she underwent surgery, but still has other small tumours: she started chemotherapy on June 4th, and is particularly fragile

We went to the shelter on June 3rd, a few days after being informed that the kibble stock was weakening dangerously.

"With food, like in every shelter, it is always needed, sometimes more, then we get a boost and then donations slow down again" explains Alexandra, one of the three volunteers, at the sight of the remaining stock.

When we came, the refuge was full, and the prospects of being able to renew the food stock were non-existent...

2. The shelter is completely full, we met its 171 dogs during our visit: the all need kibbles !

###
When we visited the shelter on June 3rd, there were 600 kg of kibbles left: a quantity not so considerable on the scale of a shelter of 171 dogs.... 60 kg are used every day
###
Found wandering, Coco suffered a gunshot wound to the right hind leg, which could not be healed in time: Coco was amputated. He has been living at the shelter for 4 years now

###
Placed in the municipal pound, Nessie was terrified there: she remained prostrated in a corner of her enclosure at all times, and could not impose herself against the other dogs.

###
Bobby was impounded 4 years ago now, when conditions of detention were the worst there. Skeletal and wounded, he also suffered from many parasites, his recovery was laborious

###
Rescued two years ago, as she wandered the street, Hilda had been kept tied up for so long and so strongly that the rope was incarnated in the flesh of her neck... Her immune system remains weakened, and she suffers from scabies that returns regularly

###
Vivi, abandoned in the middle of nowhere with her 6 puppies, owes her survival only to the intervention of the volunteers who brought her to the shelter

###
Balerina was affected by distemper, of which she now has neurological sequelae

###
Emaciated and almost hairless when found, Norocel made some progress thanks to the care provided by volunteers. But his body remains fragile: Norocel is old, and cannot cure his skin disease despite several treatments.

###
Doris suffered from a broken leg and severed ligaments when he was rescued. Although he is only two years old, he is unable to recover from his injuries

###
Left abandoned in a garbage can when he was just a tiny pup, Bonno is now 7 months old: he could not have survived without the shelter

On a daily basis, Viorica is the only one to look after the 171 dogs in the shelter, and to carry out the tasks necessary for their reception, from cleaning to daily care

The Baia Mare shelter cannot accommodate more than 170 dogs, a capacity that is currently fully reached... so much so that volunteers are forced to call upon foster families for nearly 25 additional dogs, which they cannot place at the shelter.

Present every day at the shelter, Viorica is the only one who takes care of the dogs on a daily basis : cleaning the pens, providing medical care, socialization, but also feeding everyone... And every day, she is faced with the same fear : no longer being able to feed, care for or even host all these dogs, due to the lack of resources. She knows that if this collection doesn't succeed, she won't have any kibble to bring them anymore!

3. If the target isn't reached, dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before June 13th

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

4. Volunteers are constantly and in every way trying to find kibble, but the costs are many and the results are limited

One of the calls for donations launched by the association on its networks. It is difficult for them to find new donors, and more importantly, regular ones

Alexandra, Paul and Viorica, the 3 volunteers of the shelter, do a lot to collect food: local collections several times a year, donation boxes placed at all veterinarians in the city and beyond, regular calls on social networks and search for sponsors.

But this is not enough to meet the needs of the 171 dogs accommodated, especially since many other costs must also be met: medical care, transport, foster families (25 dogs are currently placed there), rent, etc....

5. The British association that supports them has already done its maximum

###
The association Paws2Rescue has been supporting the Baia Mare shelter since its beginning, 7 years ago, within the limits of its capacities

For several years, the association Paws2Rescue has supported the shelter and its volunteers: on a regular basis for adoptions, but also financially whenever possible.

But the association has already done its best, collecting for nearly two months of food last April! Unfortunately, all the stock obtained has since been eaten up, and new help cannot be considered at this time, as the association is also helping several other shelters.

"Thank you so much it's a wonderful help for them. They deserve it" said the President of the association when we contacted her.

6. The fate of Baia Mare's abandoned dogs depends entirely on the association: we must help them to get kibble!

###
Volunteers keep the shelter for the most vulnerable dogs, whether they come from the municipal pound or from the street. But with a maximum capacity of 170 dogs, it is impossible for them to host all the abandoned dogs of Baia Mare....

In addition, volunteers also take care of the municipal pound, which now houses 300 dogs, 100 fewer than a year ago. The dogs now live there in relative comfort, and eat their fill: considerable progress, which is due only to the efforts made by the association's volunteers

Today, the dogs in the pound owe everything to the volunteers: veterinary care, blankets, pallets, daily attention... but also food. It is only thanks to the shelter, which reduces the amount of dogs at the pound, that dogs can eat as much as they need to with the quantities provided by the municipality

For many years, the Baia Mare pound has welcomed dogs in terrible conditions: every day, several dogs died as a result of attacks by other dogs, diseases, or simply hunger...

Devastated by these conditions, volunteers from the Baia Mare shelter lobbied the mayor to obtain, in 2015, the right to intervene. For a long time since, they have brought food to complete the quantities budgeted by the town hall, and continue to provide care, adoption, comfort and reassurance.

Thanks to the existing shelter, but also to the efforts of volunteers for adoptions and spaying/neutering, the number of dogs in the pound has now decreased, and living conditions have greatly improved. But if the shelter disappears due to lack of food, the situation will deteriorate again!

7. Like them, many other dogs can have a second chance if we help the shelter

Shy couldn't fight the other dogs at the pound: totally dominated, she was terrified and couldn't impose herself to eat. It took two long years after her rescue to heal her, and give her back a taste for life. Shy has since been adopted

Yull was only skin on his bones when he was found, wandering and disoriented. It took him several weeks to walk normally, and 4 full months to really recover, as Yull developed stomach and skin problems due to malnutrition. The volunteers' perseverance paid off, and Yull was adopted

When the association picked Cooper up from the pound, he had no muscle mass left. He had open wounds where his bones touched the ground, could not walk, could not eat, or even lift his head. It took over a year to get him back on his feet. Cooper was adopted in England after all these hardships

Hit by a car, Hercule lost both his eyes due to the violence of the impact.... Completely blind, he managed to recover through the care of the shelter, and has since been adopted

Like many others, Klein was a victim of a car accident and was emaciated when the shelter took care of him. An operation was necessary for his recovery, Klein has since been adopted

Abandoned in the middle of nowhere, Pretty survived thanks to the garbage cans piled there, and was particularly wild. The volunteers managed to catch her and take her to the shelter, but it took a long time to socialize Pretty. They succeeded, however, and Pretty was adopted

Captured by the dogcatchers with her three puppies, Gracie was impounded. Her puppies contracted parvovirus there: none of them survived. Gracie was fortunate enough to be rescued by the association, and now lives with her adopted family in England

Khan owes his survival to little: tied by a rope to the back of a truck, he was dragged while the vehicle was driving several meters.... Rescued, he was taken to the shelter. The association fought for his care and adoption, but also for justice to be done: more than two weeks were needed to find the perpetrator of Khan's torture

8. The plight of stray dogs in Romania

The Baia Mare shelter is located in the North-West of Romania

9.  Viorica devotes her life to rescuing Baia Mare's dogs

###
Viorica and Bear

As an agricultural engineer, Viorica has long held both her commitments to animals and her professional commitments. 5 years ago, she decided to leave her position and a relatively comfortable situation, to take care of the dogs of the Baia Mare dogs 8 hours a day, every day. In addition, she now works a few hours a day for an IT company.

She also hosts about fifteen dogs in the small house she shares with her husband Paul, who is also one of the 3 pillars of the association. Over the past 6 years, Viorica and Paul have served as foster families for nearly 200 dogs.

Alison Standbridge, President of the Paws2rescue Association, says of their shelter: "I have never met a more honest team in Romania, Vio(rica) is a rare lady. Their shelter is one of the happiest and peaceful I have ever seen".

While her motivation and devotion are boundless, she is very tired of the pace the situation imposes, and the precarious situation in which the shelter finds itself: she says that if she knows what she has today, she cannot know what tomorrow will bring.

"Unfortunately, it is easier to find a loving master than a master responsible for his animal to the end," she concludes after our exchange

10. Thanks to our platform in Romania, we can come into action rapidly

Animal Webaction dry food leaving our logistics platform in Romania

If the collection is successful, the food will leave directly from our logistics platform in Romania. We can therefore act very quickly to help Viorica and the dogs at the Baia Mare shelter.

11. What will the 3000 kg collected be used for ?

This collection is organized by the association of the Baia Mare dog shelter. If this collection is successful, the 3000 kg of kibbles collected will be delivered to Viorica to feed the 171 dogs hosted at the shelter.
