Animal Webaction visited the site 07 June 2019 and confirms the situation described below.
In Spain, Marisa's shelter is running out of food for her 100 dogs!
Following a call for help from the association, we went to the shelter on June 7th.
The kibble stock is now complety used out.
Since April, rescues have been relentless: the shelter is full, the number of puppies has exploded.
Overwhelmed, volunteers are unable to meet the growing need for food!
Exhibits, calls for donations, fundraising... nothing seems to work.
We want to help them by sending 1440 kg of kibble as soon as possible.
If the objective is not reached, we will not be able to pay the carrier, the truck's departure will be cancelled.
For several weeks, the association has been struggling to buy kibble, and has been forced to move forward day by day: "We can no longer afford to buy large quantities for economic reasons," says Maria, one of the volunteers.
We went on site on June 7th, there were then less than 70 kg left in stock, which have all since been consumed by the 100 dogs hosted. "We had to buy some again, we had nothing left," Maria told us on June 14th, with a picture showing the few bags they had managed to bring back... and which will only last 4 days.
Spring often marks a difficult time for the shelter: it corresponds not only to the end of the hunting season, but also to a high period of reproduction, and therefore of abandonment.
"We must gather all the dogs in need. The biggest peak of abandonments occurred in April/May, which marked the dogs' mating season," Maria explains.
More than thirty dogs were taken in in less than three months, a very large number for a shelter of this size. The need for food is constantly increasing, the shelter can no longer cope with it!
Overwhelmed by successive abandonments, often made in terrible conditions for puppies, Marisa wanted to show everyone the reality as it is. Found in the early morning, crushed between two crates, these puppies probably spent the whole night like this...
During our visit, we met dozens of puppies : the shelter currently has 25, which represents a quarter of the total number of dogs hosted.
The volunteers had to deal with a massive influx of puppies, very difficult to manage under the circumstances "We had to bottle-feed more than 20 of them" explains Maria.
Powdered milk, medical care, constant vigilance: the costs have exploded, and puppy care has taken a very considerable amount of time for volunteers, leaving no more time for the search for food!
We can come into action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before June 22nd.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
Each month, the shelter receives a municipal grant of 1000 to 1500€, an extremely precious help for the shelter, based entirely on volunteers.
Unfortunately, this assistance is not sufficient to cover the shelter's needs, let alone in the current circumstances.
At the time of our visit, 2 dogs suffered from injuries, 5 were sick, and 25 puppies were still in charge: their only care exceeds the budget allocated by the grant by far. They need our help !
The association has only a handful of volunteers, who do their best to meet the costs of hosting 100 dogs, starting with Marisa, its President.
Asking for help on social networks, physical and online fundraising, exhibits, they try to raise funds by all possible means, but have had little successso far.
"Raising funds is difficult at the moment, people are not sure how their money will be used, which is why they refuse to help most of the time."
A recent study from the Spanish Nature Protection Service (Seprona) reported 10,920 offences related to injuries caused to domestic animals in 2018 alone.... An alarming figure which, however, is far from representing all animal abuse in the country, which most of the time goes unpunished.
Commonly used for hunting, dogs are at the centre of these abuses: beaten and barely fed, hunting dogs are thrown into the street at the slightest sign of weakness. Exhausted and abused, dogs are often too weak to survive alone in the wild.
Across Spain, several shelters exist and are struggling to offer a second chance to these dogs rejected by others...
Led by Marisa, who devotes most of her life to the shelter, the association has a handful of very committed volunteers, including Maria whom we met.
If she and the others are constantly struggling to find the time and money to make the shelter go on, and to try to reconcile all their commitments, Maria sums up perfectly what allows them to move forward:
"We love them to madness. To a point that is difficult to explain. They are our babies, we may not have enough money to make ends meet, but we still have time to pet them. For us, they are our babies, we rejoice in every progress they make, especially when they arrive in terrible conditions. And when they leave, it's strange because on one side we miss them, but on the other side we're immensely happy."
If the collection succeeds, the food will leave directly from our logistics platform in Spain! We can therefore act very quickly, and help the 100 dogs of the association Protectora animal El Hocico to have kibbles.
This collection is organized by the association Protectora Animal El Hocico. The 1440 kilos of kibbles collected will be delivered to Marisa to feed the 100 dogs cared for by the association.
