A truckload of kibble to save Laura & Laza's shelter in Romania !

In Romania, the 90 dogs of this small rescue are threatened by starvation, there are no more kibbles!

Animal Webaction visited the site 11 July 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

Before the end of the month, Laura and Laza's shelter in Romania will no longer have any food to feed their 90 dogs!

Injuries and illnesses have led to very high medical costs in recent weeks.

These expenses were a drain on Laura and Laza's resources, who alerted us about their difficulties.

We went on the spot on July 11th.

The remaining kibbles we saw during our visit will be used up by July 23rd.

The Belgian association that supports them cannot intervene by then, and asks us to take action.

We would like to send 2400 kg of kibble as soon as possible.

1. A parvovirus outbreak and several recent rescues have used up Laza and Laura's resources

Beau and Benji are the only ones who survived the parvovirus outbreak at the shelter recently. Unfortunately, three other puppies died, despite the medical care they received

Probably hit by a car, Sacha was found with hip dysplasia that requires surgical treatment

Suffering from dirofilariasis, a parasitic disease for which a long treatment is required, Dumi also has a limp with an unknown cause, tests are still being carried out

Lydia suffers from hip dysplasia, as well as a broken left hind leg. Her care is still ongoing, the total amount of her treatment is still uncertain....

Within three months, Laura and Laza rescued 14 dogs, including several puppies, and dogs with diseases and/or injuries.

Affected by parvovirus, a highly contagious and fatal disease for young dogs, several puppies had to be treated urgently at the veterinary clinic. Only two of them survived, but veterinary fees must be paid for all animals treated....

Already in debt for €1500, Laura and Laza are still waiting to find out how much the treatments will cost for several dogs suffering from fractures, for which surgery cannot be avoided.

2. The shelter now welcomes 40 dogs, they all need kibbles!

### — Rescued from the pound, Bibi is a young dog who is still traumatized by her past experiences...

### — On his own near the shelter and very thin, Bingo now lives with the other dogs in the shelter. He's only 10 months old, and he needs kibble to recover

### — Rescued from the pound by Laza, Sasha is very frightened by the human presence, and also remains thin

### — Figo was saved from euthanasia, and is now 10 years old. He suffers from heart problems, and has lost a large part of his teeth

### — Abandoned in a field, Mirza was found skeletal and very weak, and still has psychological after-effects from the abuse she suffered

### — Abandoned by her former owners at the pound, Zia was rescued by Laza. She remains totally confused and very anxious

### — Found abandoned near the shelter, Nero is still just a puppy that needs to eat enough

Involved in helping street dogs for nearly 10 years, Laura and Laza cared for them and fed them on the streets for years before setting up a shelter. But this became impossible when in 2013, dogcatchers started to be sent massively to trap stray dogs in Romania, sentencing them to be euthanized within 14 days at the pound.

To save her protégés and spare them from euthanasia, Laza was forced to set up a shelter in extreme urgency, located on a parking yard for trucks. Today, the shelter is home to 40 dogs, in precarious conditions: Laura and Laza are struggling to take care of them, but face too many expenses, they need help to get kibble!

3. No pen, electricity or running water: the shelter is precarious and full, Laura is forced to pay a pension for the remaining 50 dogs

### — Improvised on a former parking yard reserved for trucks, the shelter accommodates 40 dogs, 10 more than the capacity originally planned

### — No pens have been built so far: Laza already pays a 400€ rent to use the land, the price to pay to keep the dogs safe... As a veterinary school student, she has very few resources to invest!

### — With no infrastructure or possible separations, Laura and Laza must ensure that they do not overload the shelter, and that they provide enough food to prevent fights from breaking out

### — Laura works full time to support the dogs, and cannot take care of another shelter. She therefore pays pension for 50 additional dogs each month, for which she must also provide food and medical care.

### — Stefanel suffers from a malformation of the front legs, which was coupled with a fracture to the hind legs when he was found. Without Laura's intervention, he would have been too vulnerable to survive on the street

### — Rescued from the pound where he was at risk of being euthanized, David only recently joined the pension

### — Found in a field 80km away from Bucharest, Carla has only been at the pension for 3 weeks, she hasn't had time to recover yet

### — A former street dog, Doris was regularly abused by the neighbourhood, which did not want her around: stone throwing, kicking and various other abuses.... She is now safe thanks to Laura's intervention, but needs to eat

Set up overnight, the shelter has only a small capacity, and no adequate infrastructure. There is no enclosure, no running water, no electricity, no drainage system: maintenance is a real challenge every day...

In addition to the dogs in the shelter, Laura pays monthly boarding fees for 50 dogs that cannot be placed there. But the rent only covers the reception and maintenance: Laura must also provide the kibbles for all the dogs, and cover the medical expenses.

In total, Laura and Laza are responsible for 90 dogs, all of them need kibbles!

4. We went on the spot, the stock of kibbles provided by a supporting association will be exhausted by July 23rd

### — Our caseworker David accompanied Laza to the shelter and pension on July 11th

### — At the time of our visit, there were about 400 kg of kibble left, the equivalent of 12 days of food for the 90 dogs in charge of Laura and Laza. These are the remains of a stock supplied by a supporting association, which will not be able to intervene again once the last bag is gone

Since 2016, Friends for Second Hand Paws has been supporting Laura and Laza as much as possible from Belgium. She tries to send food once every two months on average, but this is very difficult for her : transport from Belgium requires only small quantities, and the costs are really high.

"I try to do my best for them also but you know it's not so easy as small organisation. The food is from the pallet I sent and that's the only stock, there is nothing more" explained Sylvia, president of the Belgian association.

5. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive any food

We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before July 19th.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

6. At the moment, the fate of the 90 dogs relies essentially on Laura and Laza's resources, the situation is unsustainable!

### — A student in veterinary school, Laza also works at least 3 days a week to support the shelter, where she spends at least 2 hours a day...

Laura is a full-time employee, and devotes all her free time to the dogs at the pension and shelter. She also devotes most of her income to it

"It's hard, I work, Laza is a vet student, she also works a bit but doesn't have a straight income. As for foster parents, we only have 12 or so" explains Laura.

Between her studies and her part-time job, Laza spends at least 2 hours a day at the shelter. When she is not there, it is her mother and grandmother who help the dogs, because Laura and Laza cannot afford an employee.

Laura is torn between a busy job, on which the dogs' fate rests, and the time to spend with them as soon as she can. "Laura has a job and spends all her money on the dogs. That keeps them alive" says Sylvia, who has been visiting the shelter and pension regularly for the past 3 years.

7. Laura and Laza have not received any help to update their networks for several months, they can't do it on their own

Until the beginning of the year, Laura and Laza were helped by a friend to run a page dedicated to their rescues, promote their actions and the dogs for adoption. Unfortunately, their friend was forced to stop a few months ago, Laura and Laza currently have no free time to take over and make their situation known!

"After work we have to feed them, treat them, we also have cats and dogs at home, we don't have enough time. I tried to find someone else to help us" says Laura.

8. Laura and Laza gave them a second chance, we have to help them continue

Ignored because of her colour, Esther stayed at the shelter for a long time after her rescue, with no hope of adoption. By thanks to the girls' determination, Esther was finally adopted last year in Belgium

Muriel suffered from a head injury and a broken leg when she was discovered, she needed care and surgery to recover. She has since been adopted in Belgium

Nina was accompanied by her three pups when Laura rescued her, but one of them had already died. Nina and her two puppies have been adopted since then

Kept on the chain in poor conditions for a long time, Ella was able to escape this fate thanks to Laura's intervention, and was adopted

Thanks to their determination, and to the collaboration established with associations in Belgium and Germany, Laura and Laza have enabled the adoption of dozens of street dogs, for whom the shelter was only one step.

We must help them to continue their fight!

This collection is organised by the Belgian association Friends for Second Hand Paws. The 2400 kilos of kibble collected will be delivered to Laura and Laza to feed the 90 dogs in their care at the shelter and pension
