Animal Webaction visited the site 25 July 2019 and confirms the situation described below.
In Romania, Piatra Neamt's public shelter is out of kibble, 300 dogs will starve to death!
We were there on July 25th: already rationed, the dogs no longer have any kibbles.
Starving and weakened, they are unable to fight diseases, many of them already dead.
Hunger increases tensions, fights break out, and the weakest cannot eat.
Mirela and the Mukitza association ask us to help them protect these dogs.
We want to send 3000 kg of kibble as a matter of urgency.
The Piatra Neamt pound accommodates 300 dogs, for whom 120 kg of kibbles are needed every day. But for economical reasons, the town hall does not cover the dogs' needs: the quantities bought are random, unknown in advance, and always insufficient to feed the 300 dogs.
During our visit on July 25th, Mirela was already worried that the stock would melt without any replacement being considered... As of July 29th, there were only 7 bags left, and there was total uncertainty that new kibbles would be brought in....
Detained in an overcapacity pound, malnourished and deprived of medical care, the dogs lead a difficult life, both physically and morally.
Mirela estimates that 30% of puppies who arrive at the pound do not survive, and deplores the death of several adult dogs each month.
"Most of them died because the shelter is infested with parvo, distemper, corona virus and mange. The food is of low quality, the shelter do not afford or care to be treated as treatment are expensive. They are too skinny and cannot fight against sickness" she explains.
Already rationed, the dogs no longer have any food, we must at all costs intervene before the situation degenerates!
Overcrowded, the pound now accommodates 300 dogs. The small concrete pens were not designed for such a large number, the dogs are on top of each other.
Faced with a lack of food, the dominant ones impose themselves by survival instinct, and prevent the most submissive dogs from eating. They remain prostrated in a corner of a pen, and gradually let themselves starve to death...
"The food provided by the shelter is of law quality. Another dog died -reserved by France and another one is dying as he does not eat. I go take him out. Others are leaving tomorrow as they are dying here" explained Mirela, who fights as hard as she can for these dogs.
We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before August 1st.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
Mirela is very committed to the fate of Piatra Neamt's dogs, and already finances as many elements as she can: vaccination campaigns, spaying/ neutering campaigns, medical care etc.... But it is totally impossible for her to cope with the quantities needed for the 300 dogs!
Unfortunately, she cannot introduce alternative food either, such as bread or leftovers: this is now strictly prohibited for hygienic reasons. Only kibbles can be brought by volunteers, but they cannot afford to buy them....
The association Mukitza is one of the few involved alongside Mirela, and supports her as much as it can. But it also supports many other shelters, and the costs are enormous: several of the pools organized in recent months have failed...
She asks us to intervene to help Mirela and the 300 dogs at the pound.
Mirela is now one of the few volunteers at the pound: the situation is so terrible that many volunteers have drifted away time after time.... As a social worker at the town hall of Piatra Neamt, especially with foundations working with children, she has long working days.... And tries as she can to divide her time on a voluntary basis between children and animals in distress.
If Mirela does not complain, the situation at the shelter deeply affects her. Despite the hundreds of adoptions she has participated in, and the hundreds of dogs who recovered thanks to her actions, Mirela cannot enjoy these victories, because new dogs in distress are constantly arriving...
Overwhelmed, she needs help to move forward!
In Romania, since 2013, dog hunters are being paid for each dog captured. This perverse system invites them to pick up as many dogs as possible, regardless of whether they have owners...
Once the animals are in their premises, they no longer bring anything back, so they must disappear as soon as possible to free up space for the next ones. If they are not adopted thanks to the actions of NGOs, the dogs are then euthanized, or starve to death crammed into their boxes in indifference...
If the collection succeeds, the food will leave directly from our logistics centre in Romania! So we can act very quickly, let's help Mirela and the dogs of Piatra Neamt!
This food collection is organized by the French association Mukitza, for the benefit of the 300 dogs of the Piatra Neamt public shelter. The 3000 kg of kibbles collected will be delivered to Mirela to feed the 300 dogs kept at the pound.
