1. The refuge buckles under the weight of sick and injured dogs, it has nothing left to buy kibbles, its 170 dogs do not eat their fill!
Crushed by a car and left abandoned, Rosa had part of her leg severed, and was rescued in October. The shelter is doing its best to avoid amputation, many treatments are necessary
Titi was abandoned at the end of October because he suffered from parvovirus, a very virulent disease that affects puppies. Several have already died at the shelter in recent months, Titi's survival is not guaranteed
Thrown over the wall of the shelter at the end of October, Dolly suffers from sticker sarcoma, a sexually transmitted tumour for which she will have to undergo surgery and chemotherapy
Hit by a car, Mimi was rescued in a poor state at the end of the summer. One of her legs had to be amputated because her injuries were too serious
A retired security dog, Oriane was recently rescued and suffers from severe leg pain. Several tests have been carried out, a surgery is absolutely necessary to relieve her
With about a hundred dogs rescued in the last three months only, the shelter is always full, and now hosts a majority of vulnerable dogs, due to their age or their health condition.
Parvovirus, scabies, cancer are common diseases, as are dogs victim of car accidents or abuse. Many require long and expensive care, but also surgical operations to recover.
Crushed by the number of dogs to rescue and medical expenses, the shelter can no longer afford to buy food: "We receive lots of dogs and it is very difficult to find food for them. Food matters a lot" explained Elise during our visit.
2. Without the means to buy kibbles, Elise tries to soothe the dogs' hunger with bread
The stock of kibbles remaining at the shelter during our visit on November 2 was ridiculous, but was nevertheless used to feed the 170 dogs of the shelter for 4 days....
"We don't have the money to buy them large quantities, especially during this period of the year. We usually use only 50 kg of croquettes per day, which we mix with some bread"
Our agent Abdessamad (left) had a lot of discussions with Elise (left) during his visit. "I cannot leave the dogs without food. We’ll have to find a way even if I have only bread to bring them, but I cannot abandon them" she told him
Due to lack of resources, the shelter is already forced to distribute meagre quantities of food to the dogs: 50kg at best are used to feed the 170 dogs received. "We usually mix them with some bread, especially at this time of year because dogs need to eat more in winter," explains Elise.
The dogs do not eat their fill, but the situation is going to get worse if the shelter does not manage to find kibbles quickly, because the accounts are completely empty....
"I cannot leave the dogs without food. We’ll have to find a way even if I have only bread to bring them, but I cannot abandon them" says Elise, devastated.
3. The shelter's savings are drained, and the appeals for donations are not working, Elise is desperate
For weeks, Elise has been trying to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by the shelter, and to fundraise in order to buy kibbles, without success
"This year has been very difficult, because there are many abandoned dogs, and it's very hard to find food for them," explains Elise
"There are some volunteers who bring us from time to time bags, or donate when doing donation calls on the
internet, but not so much" says Elise
Elise is diligently preparing to take part in the Christmas markets at the end of the year, as it is the only hope to raise some money to ensure the survival of the shelter in the coming months
"Coming close to the end of this year, we have no money. Dogs need more food because winter is near. We need to borrow money to pay the workers and manage the shelter because we receive grants during February, and once we approach the end of the year and money ends, it gets very difficult. That’s why we are waiting for Christmas so that we sell Christmas stuff to survive" Elise explained during our visit, so that we would understand how critical the situation is.
The only money that can be anticipated at this stage comes from a municipal grant, which will only be paid next February: the shelter must therefore last 4 months without any savings, and in the complete uncertainty of being able to survive until then!
4. The association provides free care for 3,000 animals each year. Without kibbles, its activities are threatened!
Injured in the leg, this dog was brought in at the end of October with a major bleeding. Disinfection, sutures, antibiotics and other treatments have been provided by the shelter, which provides access to care for thousands of animals each year for owners with limited resources
Used for guarding, dogs are often victims of bladed weapons. Seriously injured by a burglar in October, this dog would not have survived without the care provided by UMPA
Attacked by other dogs, this young puppy had deep wounds with a high risk of infection when he was brought in. All his care and the follow-up of his recovery were taken care of by the shelter
In addition to rescuing hundreds of animals (dogs, but also cats and horses), the association also acts as a dispensary for the population. The poorest people can have their animals treated free of charge by UMPA, which takes care of everything.
These actions allow them to limit animal suffering, but also abandonment, and ensure control over the population of stray animals: by offering the possibility of spaying animals free of charge, the association avoids the increase of unwanted litters.
"Every day we provide free care for the people with the less resources, so that these animals have a minimum of comfort that their owner couldn't provide them otherwise, which is also why we need help because our bills, only for medicines, bandages and equipment cost us about 1000 € per month, for the dispensary only, because the medicines for the 440 animals in the shelter are not included in it..." emphasizes Elise.

5. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive anything

We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before November 13.
If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...
If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.
6. Elise has been dealing with the shelter single-handedly for 25 years despite her fragile health, she is exhausted and terrified for the future of the animals
For 25 years, Elise has been 100% involved in the shelter, as well as in the dispensary activities. But the pace imposed by the constant rescues, the anguish of lack of resources and food, and her own health concerns are now very heavy.
"My fears are related to my health issues. I also got older; I am 63 years old. and to find someone or people who can take over me for now is very hard. I have health issues because of my knee, and if I treat my kneecap, i will have to stop moving for some time about three months, but I cannot do that, I have to keep moving to look for food for the animals and manage the shelter. I am postponing the treatment it for a later time, and I am doing my best to be here at this shelter. It has been 25years that I am managing it, so I cannot abandon it" she explains.
7. No association helps the shelter on an ongoing basis: 60% of the costs are paid by volunteers
UMPA receives an extremely valuable municipal grant, which allows it to cover 40% of its expenses. But 60% of the operating costs are still paid by volunteers today! Last spring, a major fire also destroyed part of the shelter and food stock for the rescued horses, resulting in a huge expense that none of them could have anticipated.
Only two foreign associations have provided assistance in the past: occasional, and reserved for rescue or spaying actions: "Animals live years after being rescued, no one wants to pay for their maintenance"
8. We want to help them
Abandoned overnight by her owners who did not want her in their apartment, Caramel was taken to the shelter
Sick, Tequila was thrown out on the street because she had contracted a form of sexually transmitted tumour, which wouldn't have healed without treatment. She was rescued, operated on and placed under chemotherapy at the shelter
Eaten away by scabies, kiki was thrown on the street where she was wasting away alone, until the shelter rescued her and placed her on treatment
A former hunting dog, Ricky was brought to the dispensary in critical condition, suffering from several injuries and severe thinness. His owner never came back to pick him up....
Hit by a car and left unattended, Wine was unable to get up when he was found. He has not yet recovered and is moving with difficulty, but is able to move again
Following an accident, Rex had his leg torn off, and was rejected by his owners who didn't want him like this

9. Elise is fighting for the survival of the shelter
For 100 years, UMPA has been helping abandoned animals
"We have a shelter that is home to many dogs, we need to help these animals survive. Here, we treat abandoned dogs, and poor people’s dogs and once we shelter an animal, we provide them a home to spend the rest of their lives if they do not get adopted" Elise said during our visit, aware of the difference that UMPA makes day after day for abandoned animals.
"I hope this association keeps going because UMPA has been for about 100 years. I took over for about 25 years, and after a few year, someone should take over. UMPA is supposed to remain. What is also important is that we treat poor people’s dogs, so that they keep those dogs, otherwise, they will throw them in the street."
10. Rejected and exterminated, Moroccan street dogs live on probation
Petitions follow one another to ask the authorities to put an end to the slaughterings carried out throughout the country, in vain
With an estimated population of around 2 million street dogs, Morocco has been carrying out mass slaughter operations at regular intervals for decades.
Dogs are poisoned with strychnine, or shot with a gun, usually in the spring: before the arrival of tourists, or any other important international event.
However, spaying programmes have already been carried out in some Moroccan cities: unfortunately, they have so far always been abandoned, as their fruits take too long to bear fruit.
11. Thanks to our logistics centre in Morocco we can intervene quickly
If the collection succeeds, the food will leave directly from our logistics centre in Morocco! So we can act very quickly, and help the 170 dogs at the UMPA shelter to get kibble.
12. What will the 3000 kilos of kibble be used for ?
This collection is organized by the UMPA association. The 3000 kg of kibbles collected will be delivered to Elise to feed the 170 dogs cared for at the shelter.
