Animal Webaction visited the site 09 November 2019 and confirms the situation described below.

Note from Animal Webaction's team: This collection's target was set by the association despite our opinion, we think it is too high and we fear a failure.

In Serbia, 170 abandoned dogs are left without kibble, they will starve to death!

Called for help, we went on site on November 9.

The kibble stock has been used up for several days already, the supplier refuses to deliver again because of an unpaid debt.

Helpless, volunteers are forced to face the hunger of abandoned dogs day after day...

Their calls for help are unsuccessful, and neither the government nor international foundations intervene.

We want to help them, by sending 3600 kg of kibble as a matter of urgency.

100% transparency guaranteed.

1. Suffering from hunger, disease and abuse, several abandoned dogs have already died, volunteers need kibbles to feed the survivors

$$$
Suffering from a very virulent virus, Ljudi died in early autumn, despite all the veterinary care he received

$$$
Rescued this summer, Bugi contracted parvovirus, a serious disease that affects mainly puppies. Several puppies were infected at the end of the summer, many were too weak to survive

$$$
Poisoned on the street, this dog died at the veterinary clinic after being rescued by volunteers in September

$$$
Abandoned and ill, Lusi was treated by the volunteers but had to be left on the street for lack of resources. Victim of poisoning, she died at the end of October

###
At the shelter for only a few days prior to our visit, Singer needed urgent intervention. Very thin, she was wandering around with multiple breast tumours that had started to open. Her operation has been scheduled, but the volunteers don't know how they will be able to feed her

###
Found wandering and starving at the end of October, Kjara was immediately rescued by the volunteers, but absolutely needs kibble

###
Mimi suffered from a broken leg, and her whole body was very damaged when she was rescued a few weeks ago. Her eyes were then infested with maggots, Mimi is still on treatment today

###
Because he was barking too much, Crni was shot in the back, most likely to kill him. Although he survived, Crni was seriously injured and had to undergo emergency surgery. Rescued only a month ago, he's barely able to use his rear end for now

Beset by hunger, which weakens their immune system and makes them more vulnerable to disease, street dogs are also exposed to human activity and hostility: deliberate poisoning, abuse or accidents cause many victims.

Over the past three months, volunteers have rescued nearly 50 new abandoned dogs, the needs are relentless, but the resources are running out!

Faced with a food shortage that they are unable to stop, volunteers are helpless "We don't know what to do anymore, because 200 animals are waiting everyday to fill their bellies, at least a little" they said a few days ago.

2. The supplier refuses to deliver until the debts are paid, the stock of kibbles is already used up

###
During our visit on November 9, there were less than 30 kg of kibbles left.... 170 dogs depend on volunteers each day to eat their fill

Due to lack of resources, volunteers were forced to take kibble on credit for months. The debt owed to the supplier now amounts to more than €6,000, he refuses to deliver again until at least half of this amount gets paid....

###
Volunteers cannot afford to repay their debt, nor can they afford to buy bags of food to feed the 170 dogs who rely on them... For more than 2 weeks now, they have been living day by day, hoping to be able to buy a few bags, and distributing bread to calm the dogs' hunger

Due to lack of money, the volunteers had no choice but to order kibble on credit for several months, thanks to the cooperation of their supplier.

But in the face of debts that now amount to more than €6,000, he refuses to continue to help them until they have repaid at least half of the amount due....

An inextricable situation for them, who have neither the means to buy kibble nor to honour their debt!

3. Desperate, volunteers make constant calls for help, but they remain in vain

In this situation since the end of October, volunteers have been making multiple calls for help on social media in recent weeks.

Unfortunately it is no use, they do not manage to get the necessary help.... Each of them already pays what he can with his own money, even if it means going into personal debt as well, but it is totally impossible for them to cover the dogs' needs with their meagre resources.

4. If we don't reach the target, dogs won't receive any food

A failed collection on Animal Webaction

We can take action, we have already booked a truck and pallets, but we have to pay it before November 19th.

If the collection fails, we will not be able to pay, the departure of the truck will be cancelled and none of the collected kibbles will be delivered...

If the collection fails, we will refund all donors.

5. Without any help from the government or international foundations, the association fights for everything, and can no longer manage to get by

###
The Beta Zajecar association relies only on a handful of volunteers, who manage as best they can to shelter the dogs

###
The association does not have a unique shelter: dogs under their care are spread over several makeshift shelters that the volunteers must visit every day

###
Because many dogs cannot be kept in dedicated pens, volunteers build makeshift shelters with salvaged equipment, allowing street dogs to hide away a little and be protected from the cold....

###
About fifty dogs have to remain on the street today, even if they are cared for by volunteers there, due to a lack of resources

The association does not have a shelter as such: some pens have been made in an abandoned stable, as well as in a former pound, but everything is makeshift.

If they manage to avoid most of infrastructure costs, some expenses cannot be reduced: rent for lands, medical expenses, fuel to travel around town, and of course food.

The costs are huge for a handful of people, who receive no external financial support....

6. Several volunteers have already left, the association now leans on the shoulders of only a few, they are overwhelmed

###
Ana (centre) and Ivana (right) took our agent Aleksandar (left) through the city, to meet the abandoned dogs

###
"We have very little time to manage our private lives, because we are not enough. We spend a lot of our own money on dogs, getting in debt along the way. We are always stressed, because of food shortage and debts"

Following the leaving of several volunteers, the association now relies on only 7 people, who are struggling for the good of abandoned dogs. "We are working on involving more people. But as it stands, the lack of staff and resources is very present" Ana explained when we came.

"We have very little time to manage our private lives, because we are not enough. We spend a lot of our own money on dogs, getting in debt along the way. We are always stressed, because of food shortage and debts"

Despite the difficulties, they remain determined to move forward: "We hope for a food donation that we sorely need. We are thankfull for any help we get, because we need it badly to continue to work as we do"

7. We want to help them

###
Completely blind, Bruno was found on the street, confused and pushed over by other stray dogs and human. Taken to safety, his eye infection has been treated but he will not be able to see again

###
Crna was discovered with serious injuries and paralysed, but the volunteers still don't know what happened to her. Treated, she recovers slowly, and still mainly uses her front legs

###
Miksica was still just a puppy when she was rescued, wandering alone in a park, and was too vulnerable to survive without help

###
At the shelter for 6 months, Deda was suffering from eye and abdominal ailment, as well as a parasitic disease when he was rescued. He still needs to undergo surgery in the near future

###
Gaja was just a young puppy when he arrived at the shelter, found freezing on the street, the volunteers were not sure he would survive

###
Janko was wandering alone in total indifference when he was spotted. Very young, he suffered from several injuries, the volunteers have been taking care of him for several years

###
Probably born on the street, Dejzi was found with her mother as she was gradually starving to death. The two of them were taken care of by the volunteers

8. Day after day, Ana fights  to help Zajecar's dogs

###

Involved in the association for more than 6 years, Ana goes to the shelter every day. Maintenance, care, veterinary trips, adoptions, rescues... The burden is extremely heavy for this young girl, who has not even finished her studies yet.

"It's very difficult to reconcile everything, the shelter leaves no time for anything else: neither friends, nor family, nor myself. Much less a job."

"The situation is terrible, it just never stops. Until the government chooses to enforce the laws, punish irresponsible landlords, and invest more money in sterilization campaigns, nothing will change. Animal welfare associations need so much more support, especially from the government, to fight against abuse, intensive livestock farming and abandonment"

9. In Serbia, 100,000 street dogs are hunted down by dogcatchers to be killed or trapped in killing pounds

The volunteers of the Beta Zajecar association operate in eastern Serbia

It is estimated that Serbia has about 100,000 stray dogs. Private companies were commissioned in 2012 to capture these dogs: their dogcatchers (the name given to the employees responsible for the capture) have been operating throughout the country since then.

Receiving bonuses for each dog captured, dogcatchers hunt dogs relentlessly, and use extremely violent capture techniques. Many dogs are killed, the others end up crammed into killing pounds, without care or food.

Volunteers believe that their actions, in addition to being cruel, do not have a beneficial impact on the volume of stray dogs in the country. Worse still, they greatly undermine the beneficial actions that have existed until now: the subsidies allocated since 2007 as part of a vast national sterilization program have been drastically cut, despite encouraging results when they were carried out....

10. What will the 3600 kilos of kibbles collected be used for ?

This collection is organized by the Beta Zajecar association. The 3600 kg of kibbles collected will be delivered to Ana to feed the 170 dogs cared for by the volunteers.
