Animal Webaction visited the site 16 May 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
"The biggest problem we have right now is not being able to buy food for our dogs. With the pandemic, there is a shortage of kibble the shops.
The kibble we actually manage to buy are very expensive. For this reason we have to choose the cheapest options available but even then, we can't buy enough. Right now, we only have 5 bags left...This will only last a couple of more days...
Our dogs absolutely cannot stay without food! If the situation goes any longer, they will starve to death. I don't even want to think about that."
"We have sick dogs at all times. Last couple of months already were bad enough, we have lot of new dogs now, there have been surgeries for broken bones, diseases such as babesiosis, diabetes etc...
We have many dogs who have been hit by cars, many old dogs as well. And six dogs with heartworms, that require a very lengthy and expensive medical therapy.
On top of that, COVID19 happened and we are getting desperate."
"Rocky was hit by a car and left in front of our shelter when he was only 2 months old. He had a broken leg due to the impact with the car... After 2 surgeries he can walk and run but he's still very skinny.
He is still a puppy and needs to eat a lot to be able to grow normally. Without food he will die."
"At the start of the year we had some serious problems with the dogs' health. Between this and the more recent visits, we've spent spend large amounts of money at the vet's, we have debts.
In addition, we have to purchase water weekly, because the tap water here is not drinkable due to arsenic contamination. That's an additional expense of €90 per week for us to pay.
The adoptions have ceased completely. Even the dogs that already had owners waiting for them cannot be released from the shelter, the dogs are not allowed to cross borders because of lockdown.
All of these issues are making it really hard for us to buy kibble for our dogs."
"My mother Dragoslava and I take care of our dogs at the shelter and we also feed some street dogs which we can't take in due to lack of space. There are even some dogs staying at my grandmother's house.
I can't understand people who hurt, displace or kill dogs. This whole community exists because of people like that...
The dogs require 24-hour attention and care, we devote our lives to them."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Serbia, still active despite the confinement, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We've had a big decrease in donations ever since the start of the pandemic since many people are left without jobs and income.
People don't even have enough money for their own necessities let alone a dog’s. We need help to feed our dogs!"
