Animal Webaction visited the site 10 June 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
Animal Webaction cannot be held responsible for dog deaths due to the absence of kibble.
"Ever since the public shelter closed a year ago, we've seen a massive influx of new dogs at the landfill and on the streets. At the moment there are around 70 dogs living at the landfill, in the mud. And around 30 dogs on the streets.
The dump or the streets are no place to live, but these dogs have no other choice... our shelter is already above capacity, we cannot take more in...I feel so sorry for them. If we don't find food to give them, these dogs will die."
"Crni is a street dog, he doesn't live far from the Shelter. I met him about a year ago, he had a very bad skin condition and was lacking fur.
I treated him with medicine and the fur has grown back on him, but he hasn't made a fully recovery yet. Without enough kibble to eat, he will be sick again."
"Lately, we've been getting more and more dogs at the shelter, it never stops. The other day, we had 12 new large adult dogs and several new puppies coming in just one day - and that's just one exemple. Our dog count was 50 in March , now we're already at 75.
Our need for kibble has become much larger, but because of the economic crisis linked to COVID-19, the donations are rare and quite low. We have 8 bags of kibble left, and we need 4 per day only for the shelter...It's only a matter of days before the situation becomes very very serious."
"Bitsy has been living at the shelter for a few months now. She was very sick and skinny when we found her. She was attacked by other dogs and had a bad skin condition caused by the lack of food.
She is getting better now, but she is still very skinny. She needs to eat a lot more than other dogs her size, I have to monitor her very closely."
"My husband and I take care of the dogs at the landfill, on the streets, at the shelter...There are so many of them. We are giving everything we can for these dogs and will keep doing it because it is our cause to help these animals in need, but it's very difficult...
My husband lost his full time job during the pandemic, we have a young child...As much as we would like to, we simply don't have the funds to buy everything the dogs needs from our own pockets.
To make matters worse, we are facing issues with adoptions. Adoptions were blocked for several months and now the few dogs that we managed to send abroad to be adopted are stuck at the borders... We have dogs here, ready to be adopted and we have to pay for their pension...Could it get any worse than this??!"
"When I see all the animal misery we have here, I feel horrible and sorry. We're trying everything to help them, we fight every day to give them a better tomorrow. We struggle with debt and with our own emotions, but we keep going. What we have done and are currently doing for all the strays here, little amount of people do.
It's hard to watch the dogs live in these conditions, it's hard not to know whether you will be able to fulfill the promise you made to them tomorrow! We want to solve a problem in our society, we want to help those who have absolutely nobody in this world. These dogs need help, fund, homes, shares, second chances!
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in North Macedonia, still active despite the pandemic, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"The growth of the number of dogs and all the issues related to adoptions since the pandemic started mean our costs have never been higher. But because of the economic crises due to COVID 19 there is major drop in the donations.
We cannot cope on our own anymore, you don't know what a relief and help it would be to get a food donation. Your support is life saving at the moment."
