Animal Webaction visited the site 01 July 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
"Myself and other volunteers feed many animals in the streets of Pancevo: around 20 dogs, spread out in different locations. From time to time, we see some neighbors dumping dogs on the street, which only adds to the population of abandoned dogs already living there...
Due to the lack of food, they are getting in poor body condition and they are more likely to get sick. This causes other related problems such as veterinary treatments and additional costs. Right now, we are in a difficult situation, we are trying to survive with limited funds and insufficient donations.
This has direct repercussions on our actions: we are no longer able to feed the majority of street dogs that we were feeding before the pandemic, we can feed them once a week, at most... Food supply has become a really heavy burden for us, and it's putting the lives of these dogs in danger! It is impossible for us to act alone, we need help!"
"Mama has three puppies in the middle of nowhere, it is a field out of the city limits. A man who has a farm nearby saw her, but we couldn't help her there. She's still on the location, we've asked him to try and care for her, as much as he can.
She's been hunting mices in the field in order to survive and bring up her kids. We hope that puppies will be rehomed, we will take care of the mother as soon as we are able to distribute food, and find a way to neuter her somehow."
"The whole pandemic situation is making our work really hard, almost impossible. We have a big problem with our food supply. Our supplier imports dog food from Italy and because of the problems with the virus and changes in the production and distribution chain, they can't deliver the food.
We haven't received any supplies as soon as the borders were closed - which was almost 3 months ago... and we had already paid! They haven't returned the money, and we have no guarantee that they ever will, to be honest...
Our current supplies aren't enough to sustain all our dogs, some are already not eating their fill - the situation is critical!"
"Coca, is a female dog, she lives in the shelter's yard. One of her fingers was missing and another one was badly injured, so for some time she walked very slowly and carefully. We guess that she was injured by another dog in the streets. She was all bloody when she came so we thought that there was some larger injury and that her whole feet is torn apart.
She is very shy and it takes some time until she makes firends with people. Her foot has recovered now but I would definitely say she is still among our most vulnerable dogs at the shelter. She is very shy, she needs proper care and enough food".
"Here in Serbia, there is no developed culture of giving. People struggle to survive, incomes are low, they can't afford to spend money on donations, we rely on foreign help almost exclusively.
The current economic situation is really tough, we've seen a severe drop in donations, we've lost a lot of money and our food supply. We also have many expenses for veterinary treatment of sick and injured dogs.
We've had to re-arrange our resources and funds. Unfortunately, we can no longer afford to rescue more dogs from the streets, and we can't take any more animals for post operative stay. For us, time matters. We need to find a new kibble stock as soon as possible or we risk putting these dogs' lives in danger!
"Our animal welfare organization was created in 1996, we are among the oldest ones in Serbia. We have around 20 volunteers, who help us on various tasks from social media to fundraising or in the shelter etc.
Despite all this precious help, our action is very tiring and time consuming, we are constantly fighting to find supplies to care for our dogs.
I care deeply about our dogs and I believe that raising the population's awareness will help our cause, and increase welfare for all dogs. This is why I do what I do."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, still active despite the pandemic, which allows it to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"Donations have also significantly decreased. This crazy situation has affected non-governmental organizations all over the world.
Our organization has rehomed more than 7 000 abandoned animals and has helped to more than 20 000
animals during its past 24 years of existence.
We can only continue with your support - which is very important to us, since we are not financed by public funds but exclusively by donations. We need your help to continue saving lives!"
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The organizer doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded in full.
