Animal Webaction visited the site 14 July 2020 and confirms the situation described below.
"The current situation in Orastie really isn't good for dogs... The municipality has a team of dogcatchers who go look for street dogs, catch them and bring them to the public pound, where they are euthanized... Once dogs are over there, they only have 14 days to live.. It's impossible for me to just pass by passively, knowing what will happen to them.
"We've seen an increase of abandonments during the pandemic, a lot of dogs are on the street. In addition, our dogs could not be adopted during that time either, which means all the enclosures at the shelter are already filled. We've had to build a few new ones in urgency, which we paid with our own money, to be able to rescue more dogs from being euthanized at the pound...
We're expecting to bring in an additional 4 from there in the next couple of days. Our food is running out, and we are at the limit of our financial resources. I'm very worried about the lack of food, my dogs' health is at stake. No animal should starve!"
We're lacking space at the shelter, but we'll be able to make do with the space we have for a little while longer. However, food is definitely our most pressing issue, I really cannot stress this enough!
We saved Bruno from the pound a week ago. Without food (and an already crowded shelter) he might very well be one of the last ones we'll be able to rescue from this horrendous place.
Not to mention, the lack of food also brings issues for the dogs already living at the shelter. It increase tensions between the dogs, leading to fights, diseases... All of this has a big impact on their health, and well-being. Fights have erupted in the past, and we want to prevent it from happening again at all costs."
"Her owners brought Negruta to the pound along with her 12 puppies after she had given birth. Unfortunately only 9 puppies survived over there. Now at least she is together with the remaining babies.
She is shy, not aggressive but her shyness is probably the result of the traumas she suffered ...She remains fragile, having recently given birth to the puppies.
She needs food, otherwise she won't be able to continue nursing them. Given her already weak state to begin with, she would definitely suffer from a lack of food too."
"With the global sanitary crisis, a lot of people have seen their income decline, or even vanish, and as a result, there has been a noticeable drop in donations. I understand the situation, we're all struggling. I am retired, but my meagre pension doesn't enable me to make ends meet. So straight after retiring, I started a new job...
On top of my job, I am spending 3 full days at the shelter per week. Thankfully, I have some volunteers to help me, but the volume of work I have is still enormous. My dogs are a 24/7 commitment, I can't postpone their needs. They need food, surgeries, treatments, deworming, spaying... And affection and care every day, containment, pandemic or not!
The pound has fixed a price to "save" their dogs from euthanasia. If we can't afford to rescue the dogs within the 14-day limit, we have to pay a daily fee to basically keep them alive, they've fixed this price at 50 euros per day... It's a gigantic amount for Romania. Our budget is exhausted, and these innocent souls will be the ones paying for it if we don't find a solution soon."
"I have accepted the reality that there are people who do not like animals, but I have never been able to understand how you can abandon a soul that depends on you and especially treat with violence animals that belong to you or that get in your way.
It breaks my heart to see these dogs' suffering. When you see how loving and affectionate a dog is, your soul breaks, because you know they deserve better. The truth is, some humans just don't deserve dogs!
This situation has become a perpetual source of stress and concern for me. I am not getting any younger, and seeing all these innocent souls suffer really takes a toll on me. But on the other side of the coin, rescuing animals brings me unconditional joy and love and I will continue trying to help them in any way that I can."

"In recent years, there has been and continues to be a real explosion in the number of abandoned dogs and cats. This is a ticking time bomb... Dogs mate, only adding the to population of strays, who will then be caught by the dogcatchers, to be euthanized. It's a vicious circle.
We're facing tight deadlines to save these dogs from euthanasia, and it puts great stress on our ressources. With the drop in donations and the shortage of food soon making its way... I am worried about the future. Their bowl should be always full, no animal should know hunger!"
